Members

Twice is composed of nine members born between 1995 and 1999. Their names are: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu.

Twice members’ ages ranged from 19 to 16 years old at the time of their debut in October 2015. The oldest member is Nayeon (born Sep 22, 1995). The youngest member (maknae) is Tzuyu (born Jun 14, 1999).

In terms of ethnicity and nationality, five of the members are Korean and four are foreigners. The Korean members are: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Jihyo, Dahyun, and Chaeyoung. The four foreign-born members are: Tzuyu (Taiwanese) Momo (Japanese), Sana (Japanese), and Mina (Japanese born in America).

Nayeon is the oldest member of Twice. She is also the lead vocalist, lead dancer, and center of the group. Nayeon joined JYP by secretly attending a JYP Entertainment audition. She passed and officially became a trainee in 2010.

Facts

  • Initially, Na Yeon, Ji Hyo, Jeong Yeon and Min Young were going to debut as 6MIX together with former trainees Lena and Song Yan Fei. When the latter decided to leave the company, the debut plans were kept thanks to Sana joining the group. However, after Lena’s departure, it was decided to end the project and make the program SIXTEEN.
    • The members were the winners of the SIXTEEN survival program, except for Momo who was specially chosen by JYP Entertainment (company staff) and Tzuyu who was chosen by the public.
    • Momo was chosen as the ninth member of TWICE after being eliminated. In the face of the huge controversy that this caused and even though J.Y. Park explained the reasons, JYP Entertainment decided to publish an official and extensive statement on its website where he apologizes for not having fully explained the selection method during the last episode saying: “Thinking of the viewers we decided to add (already with the seven) two more members, one based on the opinion of the public (Tzuyu) and the other based on the opinion of JYP Entertainment and its staff of trainers (Momo)” therefore once the seven were chosen, the rest of the applicants are eliminated.
    • Mina, Sana and Momo were part of the “Japanese Line” (project group that JYP Entertainment planned to debut in Japan) along with former apprentice Sika, however as the latter left the company, they were unable to debut.
  • Park Jin Young revealed on April 29, 2015 during a press conference that the group’s name was chosen through a meeting. It will be ‘TWICE’, meaning that they will be able to move people twice. Once through ears and a second time through eyes, inheriting Wonder Girls and miss A’s colors.
  • After its official debut date was announced, TWICE became trending in several countries, including Thailand, Vietnam and Korea. It also managed to occupy the first place in real-time searches on Naver.
  • In a photo uploaded on the group’s Instagram, Ji Hyo was officially revealed as the leader of TWICE. It was initially thought that the leader would be Na Yeon, as she is the eldest. However, Ji Hyo, having trained for over 10 years at JYP Entertainment is the most experienced member of the group.
  • On November 03, 2015, the girls communicated from Instagram that the name of the fandom will be ONCE.
  • In an interview they said that their role model is the veteran group G.O.D., as they admire the good relationship of the members, who have managed to stay together despite the years and their respective solo work.
  • On November 4, 2015, the name of her fan club was revealed via Instagram “Eleven”. Adding a message, saying, “Many fans liked the word ‘once’. ‘Once & Twice’. ‘Once’ and then ‘Twice.’ It seems both words go together like thread and needle. If they love us even once, we will return their love twice. It is hard to make some kind of relationship between people and getting love from others is the hardest thing of all.   • On December 10, 2015, it was released that “Like OOH-AHH” was the most popular music video by a rookie group in 2015 with over 16.9 million views according to YouTube.
  • In January 2016 Tzuyu was caught in the middle of a political controversy after she was seen holding a Taiwanese flag on the show “My Little Television”. Such action was taken by Taiwanese singer Huang An (who is a strong supporter of the Chinese government), as an act in which the young singer was supporting Taiwan’s independence movement. Although Huang An’s accusations were totally false the controversy grew, TWICE and 2PM had to stop their activities in China, TWICE videos were removed from the platforms, JYP stock drops were pronounced, Tzuyu and TWICE’s name was temporarily censored on Weibo and both Tzuyu and Park Jin Young issued an official apology for the controversy.
  • On October 20, 2016, Gaon List announced that TWICE’s Cheer Up has been the most streamed song in 2016. The song was released on April 25 and in 42 weeks accumulated a record 93.7 million plays.
  • On 11/16/2016 they broke a record with their MV Cheer Up reaching 100 million views on YouTube less than 7 months after its release. Making Cheer Up the first MV of 2016 to surpass 100 million views.
