  • The name Red Velvet represents the two different images that the group has. ‘Red’ refers to the vivid, bright, and bold side while ‘Velvet’ reflects the classy and mature image.
  • The official fandom name of Red Velvet is ReVeluv, pronounced Re-Ve-Love. The first 4 letters, ReVe, come from the first 2 letters of Red and Velvet. Luv represents the love that fans and Red Velvet have for each other.
  • Yeri made an appearance in Red Velvet’s first music video Happiness prior to her officially joining the group. She was part of SM Rookies at the time.
  • The tallest member of Red Velvet is Joy with a height of 168 cm (5’6”).
  • The shortest members of Red Velvet are Irene, Yeri, and Wendy with a height of 160 cm (5’3”).

  • Since its debut (and the subsequent integration of Yeri), each member has been recognized by a color and fruit:

  • All their main songs are connected and interspersed with their main concept: “Red” for their upbeat and energetic tracks, while their mellow and mature tracks are under the concept of “Velvet”.
  • Except for Joy, all the members were part of the SMROOKIES project. The company would have introduced Joy as a special member, however Joy appeared in the Shanghai video with Seulgi and Irene in the front along with the SMROOKIES.
  • They took F(x) as a model to follow.
  • Red Velvet debuted at the top of the music charts. Their first digital single had exceptional results for a rookie group, peaking at number one on the “Genie” music chart, as well as entering the top 10 of “MelOn” and “Naver Music”.
  • Red Velvet suffered from a controversy before the release of its debut as the name Red Velvet is also the name of an Indie band around Hongik University that performed in 2013. While the indie band claimed an alleged “theft” of the name and lack of SM by not researching the name beforehand, it was confirmed that the band did not hold the copyright of the name so it does not qualify as a trademark and makes it impossible to claim rights for the name. Subsequently the band met with legal representatives of SM Entertainment and agreed to promote under the same name. In official statements SM said: “We had a meeting with the band Red Velvet and decided to keep the names as they are. We are now able to continue with Red Velvet’s debut schedule as planned, and we thank the band Red Velvet.”
  • The choreography for Happiness was created by famous Japanese choreographer Dakeoochi Ayako, who has previously worked with BoA and Girls’ Generation.
  • After the release of the video for ‘Happiness’, Japanese media reported that the video made reference to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings as well as 9/11, which generated a strong controversy. SM Entertainment had to give official statements, “After questioning the director, we found that he simply uses a source of images for the collage, and there was no intention beyond that,” and added, “Based on the fact that SM was not able to realize it earlier, we will remove the material that caused the misunderstanding as soon as possible. We will make sure not to let this kind of thing happen in the future.” SM Entertainment decided to delete the MV and upload a re-edited version without the controversial scenes, which it released two days after the first music video.
  • On March 10, 2015, SM Entertainment released a video on their social media in which they showed the new and fifth member of the group, who would also become the new maknae, Yeri.
  • Red Velvet’s first mini-album ‘Ice Cream Cake’ swept the music charts, and not only in South Korea; but also in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, among others.
