Hwarang is an awesome drama. I will watch this drama till last episode,
December 29th, 2016 at 2:33 pm
Every scene with Lee Kwang Soo, i either laugh or cry. I think he is the best scene stealer actor. Have watched till epi 4 and i do like how the story is heading. One definite point i dislike will be the hairstyles for Park Seo Joon and Hyung Sik. Hopefully the writer changes their hairstyles to bring out the best in them. Hwarang fighting!
January 2nd, 2017 at 5:53 pm
The drama is worth watching for the good blend of comedy and drama.. Go Ah Ra and Kwang Soo stole the early episodes.
January 2nd, 2017 at 11:21 pm
At first i don’t have strength to watch this drama because it brings to many actors and i thought it just offer their face. But because PSJ minho and PHS promote this drama on 1n2d i started to watch it. After i watch until ep 4, my though just ‘why the rating is low?’ this drama has good story. Still talking about the king and his enemies but i still laughing so hard when the humor scene appeared
January 3rd, 2017 at 8:22 pm

January 4th, 2017 at 10:30 pm

In ep 6… aro father meet the stranger.. the stranger said ” someone who should not be out the world”.. meaning everyone? Anything..
Cant wait next week.. so curious…so excited…

Actors are good
Princess looks cool
The main actress is overacting , not cute , not smart character
Why the King had to like her
Boring actress
January 24th, 2017 at 2:44 pm
I knew it, that this drama will capture the heart of the viewers and will make it to the top soon. Ep. 11 is really entertaining and hilarious to watch,
January 24th, 2017 at 3:47 pm
Finally at the end of ep 11, I can see that this drama is finally catching up with real deals which are about the King and the establishment of Hwarang. I am kinda sick of the love line story portrayed in this drama between Sun Woo, Ah Ro and the King. I also don’t like how Su Ho has a crush on Queen, that’s just ew. I can only accept Ban Ryu and Soo Yeon couple at the moment as they don’t have that many scenes together.
I also don’t really like Ah Ro’s character in here. She’s too weak and always depend on her “brother.” AND she always cry to the point it’s getting annoying. I like the princess instead though she’s a little bit cold-hearted just like the Queen, but at least she’s tough and knows martial arts even though she has weak lungs.
The ratings say it all, no matter how much KBS marketed the drama, yes, it’s widely spread, but people are getting bored with unnecessary scenes. Only now, after 11 episodes, the issue of King is brought up and Hwarang is becoming more serious in ep 12 (in the preview). All these while, I only see them as a group of young lads who just have fun in the Hwarang house, not as men who know martial arts that will protect the King.
January 24th, 2017 at 5:50 pm
Seo Ye Ji (Princess Sukmyung) was hilarious in Potato Start. I liked her character who’d switch to speaking fake Spanish, and because she has the Spanish look, people believed she was authentic.
January 25th, 2017 at 3:32 pm
I’m half-way watching episode 7 and about to give up the whole series. It’s boring and annoying Ah Ro. Reading the comments from episode 7 on, I’ll skip the rest of episode 7 and jump to episode 11. If it’s still boring, I’ll abandon the whole series.
January 25th, 2017 at 3:34 pm
Yesssss, finally Ep.12 become athriller episode. The last scene during the sparring of Sun Woo was really breathtaking. Good job guys!
January 25th, 2017 at 4:31 pm
Watched part of episodes 11 & 12 and still were uninteresting, giving up this drama!
January 25th, 2017 at 6:40 pm
AARRGGHH!!! CAN’T WAIT FOR EPISODE 13!!! IT MAKES ME INTERESTING!! Moo myung please kill the king as your wish! but….. how about sooho when he had call the queen?????? did sooho will planning to do something bad for moo myung?? T______T
January 25th, 2017 at 7:48 pm
the first 10 episodes set up the prelims. eps. 11&12 start to be interesting so can’t wait for the following ones. moo myung will not kill the king (it’s too early for the second lead to die!) and soo ho will have second thoughts of killing moo myung after what he witnessed in ep. 12. or is that what the queen wanted for soo ho to do? the queen’s commandant said that if people think that moo myung is the king, then the real king is safe for the time being, except that in ep. 12, moo myung now believes ji dwi is the king. monday/tuesday come sooner!
January 26th, 2017 at 1:47 pm
I don’t think that Moo Myung @ Sun Woo will kill the King. Even if he attempts to kill, I don’t think the King will die easily as the King’s death is what the antagonists, which are the group of royal officials want. With the King’s death, there won’t be much story left. Of course we don’t want Ban Ryu to be the King as what Master Young Shil wants. Who would be the King then? Moo Myung? Even if he has secret birth of him being royal blood, (I said “if”) he doesn’t have what it takes to be the King as he’s way too emotional. And it’s not entirely the King’s fault that the real Sun Woo died as it was the Queen’s order. Plus, in the history, King Jinheung is considered as one of the greatest kings in Silla. I really want to see Sam Mek Jeong as the ruler. I love the scene when the Chief Of Hwarang bow to him after knowing he’s the King.
January 27th, 2017 at 11:09 pm
who will be Mishil here?
evil Mishil
or annoying Aro?
I prefer Mishil, she’s evil but she’s strong and smart. I hate whiny, crying main female leads.
January 30th, 2017 at 2:10 am
I watch this drama just to kill time, it is a disappointing one even though I like Go Ah Ra, that is not enough to save this drama. The story plot is just bad. It is hard to like any of the main characters, especially Moo Myung. He is supposed to be the hero but I see him as a stupid annoying jerk. The remaining Hwarangs are mainly weird punks. The only one that I don’t dislike so much is the young King. Unless you are die hard fan of any of the male actors, don’t expect too much from this drama. It is appropriate that the rating of “romantic doctor”, which air at the same time, got about 3 times the rating. Simply put together a bunch of young idols is not good enough to generate good rating if the story sucks.
January 31st, 2017 at 10:23 am
On the whole, there is nothing to this show. It looks more like a continuation of a bunch of pop idols prancing about though on a different setting and in old traditional garb. Most times the hwarangs act like they are still, well basically pop idols. Watch their acting, mannerisms, and facial expressions. Warriors? What warriors? Sssh … yikes!
And 10 episodes wasted on this frivolous drama start-up. Should have done away with these early episodes. Instead make a substantial and meaningful 10 episodes drama only instead of 20 episodes.
Somebody mentioned that the actress who plays the character Aro is over acting. Cant agree more. With her kind of acting, somehow it just seems so out of place with the story’s setting.
This drama is nothing but full of hype only.
January 31st, 2017 at 4:05 pm
its not recommended, i prefer watch Rebel. The same timeslot
January 31st, 2017 at 7:04 pm
it makes me frustrating, but still watching this until last episode. fighting!!!
January 31st, 2017 at 9:16 pm
if the story centers around the king, then, i think the ratings will be higher. i love park seojoon and go ara, but their characters here (esp. ARo) are pretty lame. i still want them here in Hwarang, but just as supporting characters, not the main. i think, everyone wants to know how king jinheung came to be one the the greatest ruler of silla. it’s episode 13 already and he’s still weak.
February 1st, 2017 at 12:17 am
Make up artis why…you make park seo joon like that
worst make up i’ve seen ever
February 1st, 2017 at 6:41 am
I knew it! I knew it that the writer will let Sun Woo admit that he’s the King at the end of ep 14 and I really really hate that plot. Sun Woo’s stealing the real King’s spotlight. Come on, it’s already ep 14 and Sam Mek Jeong still hasn’t given a chance to lead his nation and build his empire!!!
People are interested to watch saeguk drama to learn a lil bit of the history and to see how a King build his empire with great intelligence of politics or destroy his empire by mistakes and greeds. But this drama, I don’t know how to say it. I know it’s something different because Sun Woo is not from royal blood, but it’s the kind of different that I don’t like (maybe some people don’t like it too from what I read from the comments above). I don’t think that Sun Woo is a great leader. Sorry, I’m not convinced with his leadership. All I see sometimes from him is a rebellious character. AND he doesn’t give a damn about Silla, he just wants to protect his girl.
February 1st, 2017 at 10:35 am
Sam maek jong was so weak…. he’s too late to saying that he’s the king in Hwarang 😭. Why should moo myung / sun woo??? 😭😭
February 1st, 2017 at 11:34 am
The king should have confessed… Why did the plot made him so pitiful… Park HyunkSik 😭😭😭
February 1st, 2017 at 12:51 pm
Agree
The main character should be the King
Not the guy
All are garbage
They should protect Shilla not the girl
Fighting not for their country but for the girl , the doctor
The doctor , acting poor
She supposes to be smart and strong
Only the princess is smart
February 1st, 2017 at 4:02 pm
Somehow I think the writer is mocking the King Jinheung’s history. I know this is all fictional, but you make the King look pathetic and weak when he’s known as one of the greatest kings in Silla. What a shame, writer-nim.
February 1st, 2017 at 5:28 pm
all this is fiction per the disclaimer. that said, would you rather that the real king reveals himself and gets killed as what yong shil wants the baekje crown prince to do? sun woo suspects ji dwi as the real king, so he is not only protecting his ‘sister’ and love interest but also the king. the writer would not want the king killed, right? what is so wrong if the young king does not have that much confidence to make bold and right decisions at the moment. he has not been brought up to be king, thanks to his mother. the hwarangs are between the rock and the deep blue sea. sun woo being brought up, independent, and had faced hardships and death in his youth could not be more confident to say something trying to save more than one person.
February 2nd, 2017 at 1:20 pm
Some ppl said tht sun woo claimed to be the king bcause apart of saving ah ro, hes trying to protect jidwi as well, but I dont believe it. his life is all about ahro bcause hes guilty tht the real sunwoo died. Im with the princess, what she yelled at them are the truth. they neglected their duty as hwarangs who need to protect the princess or royals. both sunwoo & jidwi immediately ran to save ahro, and suho just followed sunwoo bcause he promised queen to protect sunwoo. ban ryu just played along as hes still under pressured of his stepdad so he already did what he needed to do and didnt care abt the princess. how stupid can you be when u are in someone else’s land, u attack the jail guards without actually talking to the higher authority to negotiate. as conclusions, all of them are stupid. and
February 2nd, 2017 at 1:28 pm
yeah ji dwi might die if he claimed to be the king. but the writer could also make him good enough to negotiate & play politics to make deals with the crown prince. better yet, he could talk to the king of baekje himself and brings the good news @amity or diplomatic relationship deal between baekje and silla to his nations. its all about how the writer wants it looks like. I kinda agree with @Nani tht the writer is making the king looks weak and trying so hard to make sunwoo the hero of this story. there’s just something off there tho the main character here is sunwoo/mooyong. it doesnt seem fit.
February 2nd, 2017 at 11:15 pm
The King is weak and have no self confident because of the Queen fault. Pity the faceless King. 🙁 Fighting Sam Mek Jong! Hope the next next next episode will have better plot and focus on how King Jinheung be the greatest ruler of Silla.
February 3rd, 2017 at 12:29 pm
F.Y.I, Sun Woo also have a Royal Blood, he also can be a king…
but still i like him to be a Leader Hwarang..

I think something is peculiar with the drama. most people are having a second lead syndrome which is very strange . the drama is about Hwarang and Sun Woo is the main lead. the drama is not about the King. I believe the rating is low because this drama portrays the main lead character as someone who is abandoned by his family, no name, no education and no background. the adopted father Woo Ruk does not teach him anything even he is a musician and good at shooting arrows. SW does not know how to dance and using the arrow. he does not even know how to write or read. my goodness. He has to learn everything by himself. he is also have illness. I feel very sorry for the main lead. now, going to episode 14 we still don’t know his identity. Then, the second lead even he is abandoned by his mother and live his life with a lot of fear, he is still the king with a lot of silver and gold. he has someone who take care of him all the time. he knows how to use his sword, he was trained to shoot an arrow since he was young and have bodyguard. So, the second lead was portrayed as a normal main lead in most korean drama. Therefore, most ppl is having a second lead syndrome. Very very strange drama. Park Seo Joon should take a different kind of drama. It is such a waste on his talent.

I hope there will be another drama with Hwarang plot that focus more on establishment and foundation of Hwarang as well as the greatness of King Jinheung. Something that is obviously not portrayed in this drama. I hate how the writer is making Hwarang dancing like they’re a bunch of pop idols. Wth, it’s rubbish.
February 5th, 2017 at 6:25 pm
To my eyes, park hyungsik 😍 is a perfect mixer of JiSung, KimSoHyun and KimBum
February 6th, 2017 at 2:42 pm
Arlene….. AGREED WITH U… Park Seo Joon should choose better drama….
February 6th, 2017 at 3:58 pm
Why the second lead is more popular than the lead? In a nut shell, its because the second lead out-shines the main in every way.
Writer too has the second lead syndrome. Thats how this drama turns out lopsided.
February 7th, 2017 at 2:55 am
Who is si wooooo exactly….. ?
February 7th, 2017 at 3:04 am
Why everyone like 2nd lead… i love main lead.. it keep me waiting to know who exactly he is…. love him more in ep15… so manly… 😍😍😍
February 7th, 2017 at 11:51 am
Hi writer, wanna know why the ratings drop? Because you made the male lead character unlikable and annoying female lead who only cries most of the time.
February 7th, 2017 at 1:21 pm
For some reason I find the main lead incredibly annoying, I just can’t watch him any more, prepare to fast forward or abandon this show. It is so frustrating, the story just getting more and more ridiculous and now it is near the end, I still don’t understand what is the point of the Hwarang, twenty young soldiers that can dance is going to change the fortune of the nation, how? I don’t see anything that make them so special, they are not commanders, they are just foot soldiers and body guards.
February 7th, 2017 at 1:21 pm
why the rating is drop??????????? why!!!!!!!!!!
rebel (MBC) and Defendant (SBS) got highest rating….
Sorry Park Seo Joon cant help you…. bu i will stay watching this drama…
February 7th, 2017 at 3:14 pm
I like this drama!
February 7th, 2017 at 5:58 pm
This drama revolves around a group of historically serious kick-ass warriors. But as the story progressed, they appeared more and more like diaper bound emotional dipshits. We’ve had a good serving of romance, but an injection of testosterone would balance things out. They are warriors after all.

Suffering from #SecondLeadSyndrome badly… N the plot continues to make the king weak so i dont wanna watch anymore… But i cant!! Cos of #ParkHyungSikSyndrome i gonna watch and support this drama till the end
February 7th, 2017 at 10:27 pm
hwarang is one of my favorite series…its just that i have a feeling that moo myung will be dead in the end because sam will be later king jinheung…i hope it wont happen…great beginning should ends great …afterall ths is just a fiction…
February 8th, 2017 at 6:09 am
Aro is so annoying… why she alway cry like that… feel like she want to cry but dont want to cry…her face like that when she cry?…
4 ep left.. but why the storyline and in this ep 16 so bored…
February 8th, 2017 at 11:10 am
Dissapointed drama! PSJ is great actor, PHS is good also. its such a waste for them to play on this drama. Go Ara’s acting was a joke! This drama only sell the great actors, the story is boring. Just a waste.
February 8th, 2017 at 5:48 pm
There is a strong basic core to the story, i.e. the secret lineage of the main and second leads’ characters. I believe they are tied to the present Queen and Dr Ahn. Of the two guys, one is weak and the other is of king material, and the whole gamut of court intrigue, politics, etc..
If only the Writer could have focused and expanded on this, the story would have come out much better. But somehow Writer seemed to be drunk whilst writing the script, resulting in the whole drama being taken all over the place. Till finally, this drama became sober enough to reach 15 episodes before there is a semblance of stability, and the audience get to see where this drama’s story is heading.
What a waste of time, money, effort, loss of ratings points, etc.
February 8th, 2017 at 10:10 pm
happy now? the true king is taking steps on revealing himself and acting as king.
February 9th, 2017 at 12:21 am
If Jidwi really had it in him to want to be king (or was it all wishful thinking or are delusions only), the chance came for him to declare his real identity as the King of Silla and fight the Bakje crown prince and take then his chances from thereon. But no, he’s still pondering and hesitating, waiting for the right moment for the world to be ready with the red carpe to receive him. Come on man. If he is truly the man, any moment is the right moment. The situation thst he and his entourage are in as prisoners, makes the decision to declare himself easier because either he tells or not, there is nothing to lose. But Jidwi still waits…and waits ………
February 9th, 2017 at 3:08 am
So true #Lupita. The faceless king Sam Maek Jong (Jidwi) was about to step forward but the years of practised procrastinations imposed by the politics underpinning his birth, all culminated in that moment when fate intervened, revealing a more capable individual in Moo Myung.
I grew tired of the story line til this episode. I told myself this recent episode signals a needed change in the pace.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:43 pm
@ Simon K: For your information, they only put on one dance performance as a way of entertaining and introducing them to the public! It’s not like they danced every other day, puhlease. I can see that you are such a pessimistic, narrow-minded, and tasteless person. Your comments certainly show it. There are better ways to criticise a drama. Keep such stupid opinions to yourself in the future. It really puts one off. This is a to give u a mirror of urself. So ugly.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:46 pm
PS I cant stand comments like yours. I wish ppl like u would keep their mouths SHUT, who can’t respect other people’s works and the fans who like it. If you hate it, then DONT WATCH. Anyone is free to dislike and free to criticise, but better people do it within the bounds of considering others’ feelings and opinions also. NOT LIKE YOU STUPID IDIOT. Reducing a perfectly good drama to nothing but “just pop idots prancing around”. At least they can dance better than u for sure. simply b/c it doesn’t suit YOUR taste. How hateful. F OFF
February 9th, 2017 at 2:47 pm
oh that was to simon k or whatever loser.

@ CJ, I read your comments and my own comments a few more times before writing for my response. I hope the site admin can join in if he or she is reading. It is my understanding that users are allowed to express their opinion in the discussion forum whether the comment about a drama is good or bad. However, most web site discourage users from attacking other users or use profanity.
To your specific comments, what did I say that is “hateful” and who decide that I should “shut up”? I am challenging you to print my comment and your own two comments and show them to your parents or school teachers and let them decide who is “hateful”.
I do look into the mirror and agree with you that I am “so ugly” but do you care to explain why does that make my opinion of the drama wrong?
I do respect people having different opinion and I will be happy to listen to you why I am wrong and what is so awesome about Hwarang. All you have to do is spend some time to explain your view point, calling me “stupid idiot” is not going to change my mind. I am at peace with myself and accept the fact that I am an ugly stupid idiot, you don’t really need to waste your energy to tell me something so obvious.
February 10th, 2017 at 11:29 am
@simon k 105
Good on you !!!
Sock it to CJ, and real good at it !
You are right in all that you have said.
Wish that CJ would learn a thing or two from you. But doubt that this will happen, with a head full of nothing but crap like his.
February 10th, 2017 at 12:51 pm
I am commenting here obviously because I am still watching this drama. I am frustrated that how the story was told in this drama. King Jinheung was one of the great ruler of the Silla empire and eventually Silla beat the other two countries to form the predecessor of modern Korea. Hwarang was supposed to play an important role in this history, therefore I am expecting the Hwarang and King Jinheung to turn into something that worth their places in history. Through 16 episodes already, there is nothing special about the whole group. In the drama Queen Seonduk, the Hwarang are much more remarkable than this group. For those who love Hwarang, good for you. For others, I highly recommend the older drama Queen Seonduk, which is much much better than Hwarang.
February 11th, 2017 at 5:18 pm
Go Ara – always jaw tightened – so boring
February 13th, 2017 at 2:30 am
Waiting and love to watch episode 17 & 18!!!
February 13th, 2017 at 3:04 am
@Simon K
I always like to read your comments regardless if it’s positive or negative because you always give your opinions with solid arguments. Keep it coming, don’t mind about other people who are butthurt when you give negative comments on their favorite dramas.
February 13th, 2017 at 3:20 am
Cj please shut the fuck up. You sound like a real bitch who got offended because someone offended ur favorite actor. Simon has the right to express his thoughts and opinions her. That’s what this page is created for. Also the people who financed this drama could hear feedback from us.
February 13th, 2017 at 8:15 am
I really love watching Hwarang coz I love the casts. Cheers!!!
February 13th, 2017 at 8:28 am
Am so excited to watch next episodes 17 & 18…can’t wait!!
February 14th, 2017 at 8:48 am
Yeah.. it true… moo myung have right to the throne.. he also can be king… but i think he give d throne to sam mek jong…
February 15th, 2017 at 12:38 am
I’ve enough of this drama. Like people mentioned above, the writer seemed to be drunk when she wrote the script. But I’m still gonna watch this drama til the end just to support PSJ and PHS, as well as DJH. If this drama were to be acted by rookie actors, I think I’d drop this drama long time ago because it’s completely crap.
February 15th, 2017 at 3:29 am
oh my ep. 18 broke my heart.. 😭 but then again, nice episode as well.. i’ll keep on watching it till the end.. park hyung sik is the most good looking king i’ve ever seen.. hahaha 😍😘
February 15th, 2017 at 7:17 am
Well I don’t see Prince Hwi Kyung’s intention to make his son a King is for people of Silla; it’s merely for his own selfishness and hatred toward his sister, the Queen. And just because Sun Woo is also a sacred-boned, but that doesn’t mean he can become a King as Sam Mek Jong is the previous King’s grandson and nephew. Sunwoo/Moo Yung? Just the previous King’s grandson and from the prince that the previous King exiled. I mean, the weight of the royals lineage? Hmm
I think the writer is trying so hard to make Sunwoo/Moo Yung the hero of this drama. Look at the time when he saved Ah Ro in the beginning, the King also helped to save her, but Ah Ro only grateful toward SunWoo. And from ep 17, when most of the Hwarang helped to get the medicine, but the note he left made it look like the credit is all to him. Yes, I get it, he’s the main character. But if the writer makes him more appealing or likable, maybe I’d root for him until the end. But NO. His character is super annoying to me which is why I support the real King instead. And this has nothing to do with my bias towards the actors as I love both PSJ and PHS.
So now, Sun Woo might be thinking of being a King, just because he’s mad at what the Queen did to his “sister”/lover and to his life and his friend, the real SunWoo. So he wants to be a King for his own desire being in power, not for the people of Silla. This is the reason why I find him so annoying. From what I see, he only cares about Ah Ro and the writer makes it looks like, their love is so big that he’d anything for her. Blergh.

ANDWAEE!!!! HAN SUNG-RANG WAEEE???!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
February 15th, 2017 at 1:57 pm
Watching this drama because of Park Hyung Shik. He’s acting as king is commendable. I like Park Seo Joon but I hate the character he’s potraying…The story should make him as the strength of the king and not his rival… well that’s just my opinion though… Love you HYUNG SHIk. I’ll be watching you again on your next TV series….
February 15th, 2017 at 4:44 pm
I love this drama, thanks for the subbed eps. 17 & 18!
February 15th, 2017 at 7:14 pm
hwarang fighting, i love this drma, i like park hyun sikk
February 16th, 2017 at 2:38 am
ep17 skip. watch. skip. watch. skip (mostly aro’s scenes). watch. skip. watched the preview
ep18 skip. watch. skip (still aro’s scenes… and her father. they’re so irratating! must run in their blood). watch. skip (some dogbird scenes too & the queen! ahhhh! they’re so frustrating!). watched the end coz finally, the real king revealed himself. but then i saw the preview… is this still hwarang? or should they just change the title to iljimae or hmmm… “rebel”? wait, that title’s taken! arrggghhhh!
February 19th, 2017 at 5:16 pm
ep. 18: i hope the last scene is not one of those queen’s dreams, afraid to give up the throne in the pretext of protecting her son. it’s about time that ji dwi reveals himself to everyone and take a stand as a leader. if i were the king, i’d banish both the queen and the princess, two peas in a pod not worth anything.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:55 pm
much excited for the last 2 episodes! park hyung sik you are my king no matter! 😊 i will definitely miss this drama.. 😢
February 21st, 2017 at 8:37 am

February 21st, 2017 at 6:35 pm
It’s going to be a rushed ending.
February 21st, 2017 at 7:40 pm
According to the history of Silla, King Jinheung established Hwarang in 576 the same he died at the age of 51. He was about 14 when he took the throne from his mother who was holding it till he was old enough.
February 22nd, 2017 at 5:13 am

HWARANG: THE BEGINNING/THE POET WARRIOR YOUTH is a wonderful drama with an excellent cast and a fantastic plot! I was NOT disappointed by this drama. I think it’s well worth sitting through the 20 episodes. I actually cried when Suk HanSung died protecting his friend, SunWoo. Everyone did an awesome job. Thank you all!
February 22nd, 2017 at 1:21 pm

@CJ
Why are you making personal attacks on others just because their opinion is different from yours? This is a public forum and open to all points of view concerning the drama. I have found that people resort to personal attacks when their argument is weak.
This drama did not live up to the hype and turned out to be nothing but a love story…how disappointing. The writer had a wealth of material she could have used; however, she chose to abuse her creative license. I do not knock the romances in the drama. However, the romance should not have been the focal point. I think the actors did a great job with the material given them. This drama was a waste of their time and talents.
You know CJ ugliness cannot always be seen by a mirror because sometimes it is in the heart. Perhaps instead of attacking others you should reflex on your behavior and see it it is appropriate and look within your own heart and see if you can find beauty there.
This is just a drama and we are only commenting on characters, not the actors themselves.
@ Shakti
This drama revolves around a group of historically serious kick-ass warriors. But as the story progressed, they appeared more and more like diaper bound emotional dipshits. We’ve had a good serving of romance, but an injection of testosterone would balance things out. They are warriors after all.
I totally agree with your sentiments. I was hoping to see more bonding of the Hwarang, the King ascending to the throne earlier in the drama and perhaps a scrimmage to show of their skill.
February 23rd, 2017 at 10:32 am
It is my personal preference and I like this drama less and less when the story move on. The final two episodes I spent about 30 min total with all the skipping. It may be an OK drama if I only want to see pretty faces doing fun things together. When I actually try to follow the story, it hurt my head. The writer spent 18 episodes to set up the challenge that the king face, and he solve the problem basically by doing almost nothing (or just show up). And the Hwarang help him by doing, nothing. I think the rating backup my impression, this drama serve the fan base of the actors/actresses but cannot reach outside of that core audience. For historic drama, MBC is a much better choice.
February 23rd, 2017 at 2:07 pm
The actors are great but the drama is 7 out of 10 max. I liked the actress in older dramas, but here she has repetitive actions like the puppy eyes and mouth clinching that make her boring.
The drama is only talk no real action or excitement, no history, no real bromance, no fun scenes … many many missing elements to be a good drama. And by the way, does anyone know why Sun Woo keeps fainting? Shouldn’t it be addressed at the end?
February 23rd, 2017 at 2:41 pm
Finally I’ve finished watching Hwarang. It took me 1 day to finish the last two episodes because I kept on pausing the video and did something else as it’s quite boring. The ending is OK and predictable, but a little bit childish as the solution to eliminate Young Shil is by making the leader of Hwarang threaten him to kill him as he has done a treason. Uh, what? If it’s that easy, why didn’t Pa Oh or the Queen’s guard killed him for treason before? All of sudden the other officials were scared as well. Hmm, “interesting”.
This drama is merely a love story drama that set during King Jinheung’s period. That’s it. It doesn’t really show the historical parts of it.
Nevetheless, I appreciate all the actors and actresses effort in this drama as I watched the bts of this drama and they acted this drama during summer and it was really hot.
Anyway, I’ve been realizing this long time ago, but just had the thought to say it here. Am I the only one who thinks the background music of this drama is quite annoying? Sometimes the transition of the music is awkward. But the OST of this drama are superb. I love most of their OST.
February 23rd, 2017 at 9:17 pm
it wasn’t that bad, but then, to each his own! on to the next series, that i could drop midway, or finish.

There are many unanswered questions in this drama that it needs a SEASON 2! Hwarang: The Beginning.. is precisely just the beginning.. There needs a sequel or continuation to the story.. It’s a beautiful narrative that historically plays a very important role in the making of Korea as a nation. Producers, please consider making a second season for Hwarang!
May 19th, 2017 at 8:58 pm
I didn’t watch it yet.but I guess this drama is Daebak because there’s a lot of OPPA here.hahaha I will watch it soon!

Thanks for all the comments concerning this drama. I love historical dramas, especially those based on history. However, based on the comments of some who I think I could better relate to, I’m going to give this drama another pass. I like a number of the actors, but it appears the story is not as tightly written as it should be; maybe there will be a season two to close those gaps.
April 12th, 2020 at 4:07 am
I really loved Hwarang! It had a great story and so many great characters. This is a more fun historical, though it does get more serious as it goes. The OST is also fantastic. Loved it!
May 27th, 2020 at 4:59 pm
I just watch it on 2020. The drama is so cool except the lead actress. Even crying scenes I have to skip it. Anyway she did her best can’t blame it. Just love the drama and the cast how come the lead actress make the drama drop . Sorry I think with a lot of charming actor . Better choose the lead role that more natural funny and charming. Sorry just my opinions. The drama was end. Fighting I skip many eps Finally I can’t finish it.
