  17. 17 : KDaddict Says:

I saw Ep 1. Song Joong Ki is v impressive in it! He plays the young king, who is serious abt being a good king, but is frustrated by the meddling of his power-hungry father. It is a role quite opposite to the playboy in SKKS, and he does v well. Jang Hyuk on the other hand is much less impressive here, at least in ep 1, he hasn’t done anything impressive. (Don’t get me wrong, I do like Jang Hyuk, I’m just talking abt the role and what it calls for him to do.) But the story itself is kinda ho-hum: A smart kid w lots of guts has gt injustice done to him n his father, n is bent on revenge when he grows up. Eventually he becomes a guard in the palace so as to kill the king. I don’t find that attractive; at least after ep 1, I don’t feel the compulsion to watch ep 2. I think Song JK is the bright spot in this show, so when the young king grows up n is played by sb else, then this drama will be just another run-of-the-mill sageuk.

He is recognized as a great actor in korea.
i want to say that you should not stop watching this drama because there is no Song Joong Ki.
The musical is interesting drama, too. Goo Hye Sun act in the musical.
Also, you can experience korean culture indirectly.
    Sorry for my bad english..

  20. 20 : @Cocoon Says:

I wouldn’t expect fans of SJK to enjoy HSK, really. Their acting styles are too different. It’s almost impossible to dislike SJK: Would anyone in their right mind not be drawn to an attractive young man of great promise/spirit, suffocated by domineering father? Teen rebellion in a different form, that many of us can relate to.

HSK is trying to imagine, what would the guy on the 10,000-won bill be in real life after holding office for lonnnnng time, coping with the “crap” (trappings and privilege of his position) and ambitions as he does daily. It’s not “remember you fancied me as a young man with horrible dad?…”

I think both are enjoyable on their own terms, if we open our tastes up a little.

  31. 31 : KDaddict Says:

It is sad that the young king with eagle eyes grew up into a middle aged man with hunched back and beady eyes! In 3 measly episodes! Why can’t the PD keep Song Joong Ki for another 10 eps, n let him play the grown up king with a mustache, as he did for the first 10 mins. of ep 4? Why, oh why? The older man can round it up at the end.
I’ve no idea who Han Suk Kyu is, since he hasn’t been professionally active since 1999, acc to his filmography. And I was not a fan of Song Joong Ki until I saw him in this. Comparing these 2 kings as played by these 2 actors, I far far prefer Song Joong Ki’s version.
Here’s a review of his performance:
    http://thundiesprattle.com/2011/10/19/floored-by-song-joong-ki/
thundie took the words out of my mouth when she called it “the breakout performance of the year”, and called that post “floored by song joong ki”.
I watched ep 4 and 5, but all the while missed his excellent presence!

  32. 32 : MidwestMz Says:

If you have not started watching this, you are so missing out! The story line moves like silk. The actors are so real and believable. A tightly written/acted and directed production. I would not, and do not hesitate to place this in the same grouping as “Chuno.” This does not copy “Chuno,” as the window of time on this is 200 years before. All are believable in their respective roles, and play well with and off each other. This has everything one could ask for in a mystery. I have not been able to ‘guess’ which direction the story line is going before hand, and the surprises are just that. Some of the actors I have seen before, some are new to me. All are being enjoyed to the fullest by myself, and so many others!! Take the time, sit down and get a few episodes under your belt. If it does not grab you, sorry, you are just brain dead . . . .

  33. 33 : KDaddict Says:

    #32:
The comment is very nicely written, except the last sentence. “If it does not grab you, sorry, you are just brain dead……” Love it to your heart’s content, but to insult everyone who doesn’t feel the same way abt this show as you do? Ever heard of different strokes for diff folks?
I read the recaps on DB. The eps seem amazing. But there are so very many shows going on all the time. It is a good thing that there r some shows that we can do without for one reason or another. Otherwise, we’d be glued to the screen ALL the time, n be really brain dead!

  36. 36 : Serena Says:

I will watch this seire because I’m Joong Ki fan. hoho

  37. 37 : @KDaddict Says:

The filmo of Han Suk Kyu you saw is incomplete. Go to Wiki or IMDB – he’s been in 10 movies since 1999. Primarily a movie actor.

Joonki shows up again later in a flashback with him. It’s probably a hard sale without Joonki, but Han does sink his teeth into what Sejong’s leadership involves later on.

And totally agree, beady eyes and hunched back are obstacles in quality acting.

  38. 38 : KDaddict Says:

    #37:
I didn’t mean to belittle Han SK. I judge each actor by what I see in front of me. I know that if we love or hate sb in a previous pc of work, the feeling carries over into their next project. When I said I didn’t know who Han Suk Kyu was, I just meant that I’m not an anti-fan, I carry no baggage abt him, since I didn’t know him from Adam.
If the young king wasn’t played by Lee Joon Ki, who looks so fresh w bright eyes n bushy tail, Han wouldn’t be compared to him, and his beady eyes n hunched back might not be so noticeable or objectionable. I see it as an error in judgement on the part of the PD team, instead of a fault of Han’s. I don’t doubt that he is a good actor. Most veteran Korean actors know their craft.
I’m a KD (drama) addict. Don’t go for K films. There just aren’t enough hours in a day! ;)

  39. 39 : KDaddict Says:

I think the problem is one of “Bait n Switch”. You sign up and start watching thinking that it is one thing. Then in 3 eps n 10 mins, it becomes sth else. Even if that sth else is of hi quality but diff nature, u can’t help but feel that “Hey, WTF?”
I thought Lee JK was cute in SKKS, but it wasn’t a major enough role to make a fan out of me. He did turn in an eye-popping performance in DRT. It’s a tough act to follow is all I’m saying.
If they had let him continue on as King, by adding a thickening n graying mustache, I don’t doubt that this would have become one of my favs this year. My loss!

  40. 40 : KDaddict Says:

Oops! It’s Song JK of course. I’m currently re-watching Iljimae, n discussing its star Lee JK with ppl; hence the mistake.

  41. 41 : @KDaddict Says:

‘Kay haha, you explained well. It took me aback his physical appearance is the sole reason you objected (since he’s playing a much older king who has diabetes etc.) But a “switch” makes better sense. How do you think PDs should handle it, generally? Are there a lot of eye-candy actors in their 40s n 50s? Should stories just paste facial hair on 20-sth from now on, or just cast LBH, LJJ et al in every “older” lead? Do 20-sth make convincing midlife crisis peeps? I know it looks like a tough act, but life is full of layers many of them unfathomable…oh WTF, happy holidays!

  42. 42 : KDaddict Says:

Look, you are beating this thing to death already! At 1st it was a discussion. Done ad nauseum, it becomes tiresome. You like it w HanSK. Fine w me. I don’t like Bait n Switch. Leave it alone. We don’t have to agree on this at all. WTF indeed. Happy Holidays!

  51. 51 : blacque Says:

i’m just 2 episodes away from the finale and I’m really stalling and trying my best to make this drama experience last just that little bit longer. Song Joong Ki definitely was the bait in this drama and his performance certainly did not disappoint (his lil rebellious speech against his dad the King in the forest was real epic), but after episode 4 where the switch happens, I was already jumping onto the line and gladly be hooked by the plot. Every single actor and actress in the drama live up to their character portrayals. Special mention should be given to veteran actors and actresses like Han Suk Kyu, Ahn Suk Hwan and Song Ok Suk who made the difference with their experienced acting in this epic drama. Even the child actor who played Ddol Bok manage to capture my attention from the way he so convincingly bring out the character of Ddol Bok. But of course, the one who shines the most was Jang Hyuk. It is my first time watching his drama, but its obvious that he is definitely one of the best actors in Korea. Probably up there with LBH? Anyway, I will be suffering from Jang Hyuk withdrawal after this….so…that means I should go watch Chuno, eh?

  56. 56 : Jennie Says:

Finally finished watching this today and I’m feeling pretty lost right now.Don’t know whether I am glad or sad that it’s finally over! I almost gave this drama up after SJK finished his part of the drama but the intriquing tale made me watch one ep after another. You either learn to love this drama or hate it, I guess. Many probably gave up because it is not your typical popular drama with young/youthful goodlooking cast, a predictable script, popular OST and romantic scenes to make you squel with delight. I love this drama because of its seriousness, the intensity, the depth and great acting from the veterans. I do not consider myself a fan of Jang Hyuk but I have deep respect for him as an actor. I first saw him in Successful Story of a Bright Girl, hated him in Robber and Penthouse Elephant, fell in and out of love with him in Chuno, wanted to kick his ass in Midas and for DRT, he gets a standing ovation from me! ” Dae-to-the bak” drama!

  57. 57 : KDaddict Says:

    @Jennie,
How many KDs r you watching at once? Haha.
The Musical, Me too Flower, PP, DRT, Brain; any thing else?
I’ve also been considering watching this. It’s either this or Brain. Which one is better? And why?

  58. 58 : KDaddict Says:

This is also supposed to be a v gd drama. How come there r so few comments? Nobody is congregating here to talk abt it, as they do for Brain??

  59. 59 : Jennie Says:

@KDaddict I usually take my time watching on-going dramas cos I have to wait for subs. I don’t watch live streaming, so I’ve got plenty of time to switch dramas. I was juggling betw M2F, FBRS, DRT,P2 and 1KPromise all at the same time n believe me it’s doable becos of all the waiting time for the subs. In between, I caught Brain on tv. Most of the time, I’m like 2/4 eps behind. So when Musical, M2F n 1KPromise ended, I started Brain fr the beginning and shld b able to catch up today. Right now I’m only following P2, Fermentn F and Brain. Waiting to watch METS and Bachelor’s VS whi I haven’t started. I stopped watching Vampire Prosecutor and Ojak Brothers to follow DRT and M2F.
As for whi one to watch first, I’d suggest you watch Brain first becos it’s at a faster pace and lighter in terms of storytelling. Better to watch DRT on video, then you can fast fwd some draggy dialogues cos it can be really draggy. Both are good stories tho. :-)

  60. 60 : tpm Says:

    @KDaddict

I started watching TWDR due to SJK and stopped at Ep 4 when the switch happened. However, due to the high ratings and so many positive comments, I continued watch until the end. It was a good drama depicting how King Sejo created and introduced Hangul amidst the challenges and obstructions given by the antagonist team, Milbon. However, the plot has too few romantic scenes and I find the chemistry between the OTPs lacking. This is not surprising as romance was not the central theme of this drama unlike TPM. I am also not drawn to Jang Hyuk although he is a respected actor.

As for Brain, can’t offer any comments since I do not intend to watch it as I do not like medical dramas ( sigh..can’t stand the sight of blood!). Tried watching New Heart due to Ji Sung but have to stop halfway as I almost fainted when I saw the gory sight of the heart been operated!

    @Jennie-59, tpm/tc-60,61,
    Good to see you both.
I also am not a fan of medical dramas, but Shin got this prize n so many ppl raved abt Brain that I got curious. I watched it n liked it well enough. Brain just finished its run today. So I’ll start TwDR now. I feel the same way abt Jang Hyuk btw.
Absolutely adore Song Joon Ki in the 1st 3 eps n 10 mins! Too bad it didn’t last longer.

If anyone is interested in studying Korean in Sageuk drama, I’ve been working on a project on my blog studying scenes from Deep Rooted Tree. I’ve transcribed the Korean (it has been checked by a native Korean speaker) and then translated it into English. Then I make notes on anything of interest (language or culture) in the scene. This helps me study Korean and I hope it’s useful, but any suggestions or feedback would be welcome.
