Born in Busan, South Korea in 1980, he studied art, photography and film at the École nationale supérieure d’art in Nancy and at Le Fresnoy in Paris. His short documentary Promesse won the Grand Prize at the Asiana International Short Film Festival; his omnibus short The Pig screened at Cannes and Busan; his feature documentary Madame B., histoire d’une Nord-Coréenne won awards at film festivals in Moscow and Zurich while his short film Hitchhiker screened in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at Cannes. In 2018, his debut feature film Beautiful Days opened the Busan International Film Festival.
