Myeong Ja changes her name to Akiko. As she falls in love with Min Ho, Dong Jin, a left wing intellectual who admired Akiko, is heartbroken and decides to leave for Tokyo. To avoid the forced drafting, Min Ho decides to abandon his hometown. Myong Ja then decides to look for true love. Her journey goes across Hokkaido to Sakhalin. Feeling homesick, she attains citizenship for North Korea but realizes she cannever return home.
