Name and Fandom
The name Mamamoo represents the group’s desire to reach fans organically and instinctively through their music. Mamamoo is the sound that babies make, where ‘mama’ signifies mother.
The official fandom name of Mamamoo is MooMoo (무무), which represents the deep relationship between Mamamoo and their fans, regardless of age or family relations. The word MooMoo is the repetition of the last syllable of the group’s name, Mamamoo. The group’s lightstick is in the shape of a radish as the word 무 (moo) means radish in Korean.

Mamamoo is composed of four members born between 1991 and 1995. Their names are: Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein, Hwasa. The leader and the oldest member is Solar (born Feb 21, 1991). The youngest member (maknae) is Hwasa (born Jul 23, 1995). All the members were born in South Korea.

Wheein did not renew her contract with RBW in 2021 but signed a contract extension to stay as part of Mamamoo until December 2023.
The girls have about the same training time, which was about 3 years. They were all in a large group and at the end of a competition only four would be selected. The girls also revealed that the four of them started living together a year before the debut.
Besides Mamamoo, “Belly Button”, “Orange” and “160cm” were names under consideration for the group.
Whee In and Hwa Sa were the first to be chosen.
Mamamoo also participates in the ideas for his comebacks, besides collaborating in most of the times with the lyrics or compositions of his songs.
Moon Byul participated in the creation of the dance to the song Mr.Ambiguous.
In a performance at The Show the girls invited 30 MooMoos to dance Mr.Ambiguous with them.
Mamamoo was in charge of creating the choreography for his second promotional song: “Piano Man”.
“Piano Man” was only going to be released in Single format, but the company seeing that fans were disappointed by not releasing a mini album, they decided to re-release the Piano Man single but as a mini-album days later by adding one more song (Love Lane), thus achieving their 2nd mini-album.
Im Chang Jung congratulated Mamamoo for being the best rookies of 2014 for him.
During Piano Man’s performances, in the musical shows, Mamamoo would add steps from other choreographies (Like A Cat by AOA, LUV by Apink, among others) as well as Hwa Sa and Moon Byul would change the lyrics a bit in their parts.
In 2014, they were chosen by ‘Billboard’ as the K-Pop artist to watch. Billboard wrote, “This soulful girl group is attracting a lot of attention for focusing on talent and vocals above all else. With a retro-based sound that highlights their superb singing and rapping skills, it feels like only a matter of time until the fresh quartet has a song that becomes their signature and cements them among the top girl groups.”
Spor Chosun revealed its results for the 2015 girl group ranking, where Mamamoo was present at the “Candidate Group” level highlighting the level with impressive rookie groups at that time.
At first, Kim Do Hoon wanted Mamamoo to have only a retro style, like the group Big Mama, but not wanting to be limited to that, he added rap.
They earned the nicknames “Potential Idol”, “Monsta Rookie” and “Idolos-autosiembra” in their rookie year.
Mamamoo revealed that they wish to promote with all types of music genres.
Solar, Hwa Sa and Moonbyul collaborated together with Kim Do Hoon to create the lyrics of Um Oh Ah Yeh.
Sound engineer Chris Gehringer, who has worked with Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Madonna participated in the new mini-album and worked on its track “Um Oh Ah Yeah”.
Singers and actors showed support for “Um Oh Ah Yeh” on their personal accounts (HyunA, Hani and Jeong Hwa (EXID), G.NA, Lee Seung Gi, Jonghyun (CNBLUE), Jessi and Kang Min Ah) when the song was released in 2015.
Just like Piano Man’s promotions on music shows, they did the same with UOAY, except that they added dance steps from 90’s K-Pop groups (such as FinKL’s Forever Love, SES’s I’m Your Girl, among many others), as well as changed small parts of the original lyrics, this was for only one week while promoting on music shows.
Mamamoo held a design contest in their fan café for Moo Moo to design the costumes for them, and they would choose only three to wear during performances in the musical programs during UOAY, the winning costumes were: 
Tickets for their first official fan meeting sold out in just 1 minute, proving the group’s popularity and that they only debuted a year ago (2014).
Mamamoo broke the record for the most members in its fan café in the shortest amount of time, gaining 30,000 members since it opened in February 2014. In 2016 with 82,000 it is one of the groups with the most members.
The four members appeared on Show Me The Money 4, to collaborate with rapper Basick in the Semi-Finals of the show on the song Stand Up.

They won first place in Immortal Song on October 31, 2015 with 404 points in a double-episode competition.
They won a gold medal in their first appearance in the special program “Idol Star Athletic Championships” in the category: Archery. Whee In drew attention for scoring 10 points in a row.
Daum awarded a golden hand award to the Mamamoo fancafe for the beautiful fanarts (drawings) that the MooMoos upload of them [Daum Fancafe Awards: Golden Hands Award].
They are known to always be doing improvisations in their performances. Mamamoo revealed that the idea originally came from their producer Kim Do Hoon, but they are the ones who plan what they are going to perform.

Hollywood actress Chloe Moretz on her visit to Korea, became a big fan of MAMAMOO when she saw a performance of the song “1cm”, and promoted them through her social media. MAMAMOO conveyed their thoughts, saying, “When Chloe Moretz first mentioned us, we couldn’t believe it. We had fun preparing for the performance, and that excitement must have shown. We haven’t traveled overseas much yet, so it’s amazing to see others liking our music all over the world. We want to meet more foreign fans if we get the chance.” We’re looking forward to meeting more foreign fans if we get the chance.”[5
At a performance in Australia (SXSW), American singer Siedah Garret was present in the audience and commented that she really liked their song “1cm” when she met them backstage, and also told them that she would like to work with them.
On April 16 they made a special appearance at Music Core performing BTOB’s It’s Okay.
Mamamoo wins for the second time in Immortal Song in the April 30 episode with 433 points .
On May 7, 2016 Mamamoo held a BBQ Party with the fans for winning #1 for the first time. First it was going to be a three days and two nights camping trip, but the fans decided to give Mamamoo those days off through a poll that was done on the official fancafe.
In 2016 Mamamoo ranked #2 in a national survey of most requested/requested artists to perform at college festivals.
In the bet on who would plot at the top of the charts with Angel and DabDab, the loser had to eat spicy pork chop, which turned out to be Hwasa and Moonbyul.
Moonbyul, Solar and Hwasa once again collaborated with their producer Kim DoHoon to create the lyrics of their 5th promotional song ‘Decalcomanie’.
They are considered one of the best vocal groups of the last decade.
Mamamoo’s performance at the Blue Dragon Film Awards ceremony went viral in Korea for their amazing improvisation and stage presence with the song ‘Décalcomanie’, even on NaverTvCast portal reaching 2 million plays in a very short time and making the song charting higher. They were invited for the consecutive time in 2017 presenting ‘Yes, I am’.
The SNL Korea episode with Mamamoo broke the ratings for the Twice group and that entire season (Season 8) with an average of 2.8% and 3.7% at the highest in 2016.
Mamamoo for the first time managed to enter the top 3, at #2 in the Girl Group Brand Big Data (brand reputation index) for December 2016, their positions have always been between the top 5-15. In 2017 they managed to rank #2 again for the month of July. In 2018 they again ranked #3 for March and #2 for the month of April. In 2019, they managed to be #1 for the month of December.
Mamamoo (along with Taeyeon) were the only artists with three songs inside the Top100 GAON Chart for 2016, the songs that entered the top were You’re the best, Decalcomanie and I Miss You.
They revealed that they created approximately 98% of the choreography for their song “Decalcomanie”.
They were the only girl group invited to the Immortal Song special “Kings of the Kings”.
The tickets for his second solo concert called “MOOSICAL: Curtain Call” sold-out in one minute, the same happened with his first concert “MOOSICAL”.
Hwasa, Solar and Moonbyul once again collaborated with Kim Do Hoon to create the lyrics of 6th promotional song “Yes, I am”.
With their album “Purple” they managed to obtain the number 1 position in albums in ‘Billboard’.
In 2017 they broke the record for the song with the most listeners in 24 hours on MelOn with “Yes I Am”, accumulating a total of 940,435 listeners, breaking the record previously set by Wonder Girls with “Why So Lonely”. Currently (2018.2019-2020) ranks third in the number of listeners the song.
They appeared on the well-known youtube channel “ZANY TV” on July 31, 2017, which was a multi-part segment where they were interviewed, reacted to Latin MVs, and tasted typical Latin food.
Moonbyul once again collaborated with Kim Do Hoon to create the lyrics of 7th promotional song ‘Starry Night’.
In 2018 they received platinum certificate (for 100M) for Streaming from GAON for their song “Starry Night”.
In 2019 they received platinum certificate for GAON Download for their song “Starry Night” which reached 2.5M downloads. Decalcomanie reached 2.5M in the same year.
Solar and Moonbyul once again collaborated with Kim Do Hoon to create the lyrics of the 10th promotional song “Gogobebe”.

Hip stayed 13 weeks in the MelOn weekly Top 10 chart, surpassing its personal record of the 11 weeks Starry Night had managed to stay there. It was also the longest running song by a group in the Melon Chart – Weekly Top 10 in 2019.
Moonbyul once again collaborated with Kim Do Hoon to create the lyrics of the 12th promotional song “AYA”.
Hip became the first Mamamoo song to spend 52 weeks in the weekly MelOn Chart – Top 100.
In 2020 they received platinum certification (for 100M) for Streaming from GAON for their song “Hip”.
Starry Night was included in Melon’s TOP 100 Songs of the Decade (2010-2019).
They received a plaque from Hanteo Chart for selling 120,000 copies of ‘TRAVEL’ in its first week.
