i want to watch this drama because of yowon! xD
October 1st, 2012 at 5:20 pm
Hehehe… another historical drama to be watched. I will not miss this one.
October 1st, 2012 at 5:38 pm
Airs tonight.
I thought Yoo In Na was engaging and wonderful in Queen In Hyun’s Man. I’d feel better watching this drama had she been given in the role of Kang Ji Nyeong. IMHO Lee Yo-won did not cut it in “49 Days” her most recent. And her acting in Queen Seon Duk was below par, though the director may have had a hand in that.
I want to be proven wrong. We just have to see.
October 1st, 2012 at 6:09 pm
“Korean title 마의 ‘Maui’ is a term used during the Joseon Period to describe a veterinarian.”
Also:
1 – The name of the big island of Hawaii.
2 – An ancient hero/demigod or heroes of Polynesia.
3 – Beverage restores youthful vitality to the old & decrepid. (nah.. just kidding).
October 2nd, 2012 at 4:45 pm
@Lorem-29,
“Maui” as given in the note is a mis-spelling. It should be Mai, pronounced ma-i. And it means “horse doctor”, not veterinarian in general. So you see, as you mentioned before, translated titles often don’t make sense becos of mistakes made in translations.
October 2nd, 2012 at 11:06 pm
So happy to be seeing Lee Sang Woo again. He may not be the lead role but it is interesting to see how he will portray the character in a historical drama setting. I just hope that he could be again another drama as the main lead.
October 3rd, 2012 at 4:18 pm
Is lee sang woo not bankable enough to be the lead actor in this
drama? Is he not that popular in korea? I would prefer him to be the
leading actor. That’s why i dont want to watch this drama.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:18 pm
@magsie(32), I think Lee Sang Woo more popular in Korea. Based on SDA 2012 People Choice for Korean voters, his position on #4 with Park Yoo Chun, Lee Seung Gi and Lee Min Hoo as Top 3 Winner. But the result for International voters his position only on #9. ^^`
Agree with you, I want him as the lead actor. ^…^
October 9th, 2012 at 11:29 am
how come rating dropped?
October 9th, 2012 at 12:16 pm
stars are popular? do you guys know why the rating of episode 3 dropped?
October 9th, 2012 at 5:50 pm
great casts 🙂 we’ll see then…
October 12th, 2012 at 10:27 pm
Lee yo won eonni, i miss u so much. i have anticipated ur new drama for a long time, and finally i got it. i can see u again in horse healer. i hope this drama will run well and get the best ratings.
fighting!!!!
October 13th, 2012 at 3:49 pm
@Cam Visal
that because ep.3 delayed 1 hour from it usual airtime maybe without notification
October 13th, 2012 at 4:35 pm
This drama is still in infant stage, waiting for the plots to thicken. Writer seems to put in too many twisted plots that can result in the characters to be conflicted with each other, eg. relationship of fathers, sons, daughters, friends, close relatives being in opposing sides.
October 13th, 2012 at 5:38 pm
KDaddict #30 Thank you my dear. Just having fun with it 🙂
October 13th, 2012 at 6:32 pm
Recently I noticed that most KDramas have back/ past stories attached with childhood stories, like May Queen,Five Fingers, The Great Seer, which is the reason I skipped watching the ep2 of this drama. I thought the ep3 would start from adulthood, I was wrong. Even ep4 is still in childhood, come on writer, move on faster.
October 13th, 2012 at 7:56 pm
@swift,
most KDramas these days FINALLY recognised the great great acting talents of the child actors and thus, put them on more longer airing time. I appreciate the fact that they are now even putting their photos alongside with the adult actors such as May Queen. I like dramas which showed childhood times to adult times.. it gives the story more depth and when the child actors are better than the adults such as TMTETS and Giant, you just kept wishing that the child actors could continue acting throughout the drama. So I’d say kudos to the producers and writers who finally recognised all the so very talented young actors in Korea! fighting!!
October 25th, 2012 at 1:14 am
I am happy Lee Sang Woo appear on ep8….waiting for so long. more scence pls ………
October 27th, 2012 at 3:21 am
@ Kimchille
I half agree with you on the child actors being better in TMTETS. Ha Ga Ni’s child actor was so much better than her. But Kim Soo Hyun nailed that role! why do you think he’s so famous now duh!!
and i do appreciate child actors if they actually use them in the drama not as a flashback or as the younger image of the adults…in my mind, i’m think oh great! the story hasn’t started yet. I love and respect child actors just not the way they use them to prolong a drama that needs to shorter.
October 29th, 2012 at 2:45 pm
Im soo happy that this one is improving in terms of ratings. I love Lee Yo Won since Queen Seon Deuk and one of my all time fave 49 Days.

November 20th, 2012 at 1:16 am
This drama is so good that I start again to watch from the begining…the people that are not watching this drama they do not know what their missing…..It is so far the best one right now!
November 21st, 2012 at 6:47 pm
The story plot is rather interesting. It is sad that LMH whose character was good in ep 1 &2 turned to be a baddie in the later episodes. The power play in the royal courts will be the main story driver in getting viewers worked up in rooting for the horse doctor to triumph over all the other baddies, hahahahahhah…………
November 21st, 2012 at 8:00 pm
Wonderful show. Getting better by each episode and you always wonder what’s going to happen next.

I was moved with “Yi San” and “Dong Yi” by the same writer. She has a beautiful heart which comes through her work. Here she does it again.
Keep up the good work.

December 6th, 2012 at 4:46 pm
i really love this korean drama, very interesting and very nice story, & also all d casts…i cant wait to download this..btw have more power..my dream is to see you all in persons…

All the actors do a fine job. I’d love to see CSW do a drama with YEH, they would have chemistry. Just my opinion.
December 12th, 2012 at 4:18 am
best drama ever!!!
December 12th, 2012 at 8:53 pm
So UNPREDICTABLE!!,..every episode is worth the watch,..it will give you chills and a satisfying story,..if you liked dramas like, sungkyunkwan scandal, dong yi, and other historical dramas, it is the perfect treat for you.,.. Finally a good drama and good actors. I’ll stay tuned up for more!!
December 12th, 2012 at 11:55 pm
Unfortunately, this week’s two episodes were extremely draggy and unsatisfying – evidenced by the drop in ratings too. This drama started off well but I think they are running out of storyline in view of the still many more episodes to come. It is testing the viewers’ patience when the two protagonists kept missing the chance to reveal to each other their past acquaintance. Also, it seemed that all the “bad guys” in the show has nothing better to do but only has one target, Baek Gwang Hyun, to keep sabotaging, over and over again…
Hopefully, the show will turn a corner and have different angles and other more heart warming stories in the later episodes.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:02 pm
i love eps 21. :3
December 13th, 2012 at 5:11 pm
You are perceptive @unknown. It is as you’ve described it. I wonder sometime if the director is stretching out what the writer had put to pen to meet some other criterior — commercial considerations perhaps.
Still I’m enjoying this drama. its characters and their antics. The relationship between Kwanghyun and Ji Nyeong has all that innocence they had as children. Their hearts aching with the memory of someone each believes they’ve lost. Not knowing that they are, each others yearning. And there’s our princess and her crush on Kwanghyun, her wreckless disregard for status, dragged along by the dictates of her virtuous heart is truly a thing to behold.
Thank you to writer, but could the director please not drag out the scenes. It diminishes the impact. Good show!
December 26th, 2012 at 4:48 pm
a really meaningful and educational series and I even encourage my niece to wathc the series. Well done to all that involved in making of this wonderful series.
December 27th, 2012 at 3:50 pm
The subtitles takes 4~5 days while it is almost overnight for “I Miss You”. I guess the translators are fans of Micky Yoochun, Eun Hye or Yoo Seung Ho. There can be no other explanation.. can there? Eh? Waeeee!

I am queen of the game fan .so i was looking for a series for jo jin mo and i found this one.but it seems a supporting role .i wonder where he has been for years and why he came back with a small role .is his popularity fad out in korea or what ?
I see nowadays that only the youth actor who has the all care and puplicity
December 28th, 2012 at 8:32 am
@maida #72 You’ve raised a good point. Jin Mo is a fine actor who deserves a lead role in a drama IMO. Yea, I guess youth and popularity draws audiences and therefore revenue for the networks & production company. It’s the harsh reality.

congratulation for Cho Seung Woo!!!
he won daesang award 😀

Where is the subs that you are referring to?
January 4th, 2013 at 6:26 am
This is a good drama. I think Baek Gwang Hyun is not smart. If you want to fight with the poweful person, he need to claim his title. Money is power. Only then he have power to uncover his father’s murderer.
January 7th, 2013 at 6:05 pm
Yahh.. Lee yo won nggak menang yak di drama ini?? T_T
January 9th, 2013 at 1:30 pm

@Norka #71 Subtitles for English speaking audience is provided by MBC. But a fansite like viki has them as well for their (I believe authorized) showings.

Princess Sookwhee on her upcoming marriage:
“Seriously, he’s from a good family, but he put the ‘ugh’ in ‘ugly'”
January 11th, 2013 at 7:32 am
who is the one playing ‘so kayong’ can anyone tell me?
January 11th, 2013 at 8:41 am
@looker #82 The actress I think is Eom Hyeon-kyeong. But I believe her name’s also written Uhm Hyun Kyung. She appears in the new drama Sirius as the character Kim An Na.
January 12th, 2013 at 12:45 am
As for me I think that Baek Gwang Hyun, will end up as his father dream–having a hospital for the poor, people….far away from the people that always want to do so much harm to him…..and maybe will have to save one of those mean people…..I do not think that the nurse give the right box, I bet she does have the real documents to demostrate who he really is to the Joseun people….Oh I love this dram a lot one of the best right now!!!

Hi guyz!
just wondering if this drama is worth watchinG? can somebody answer me pls… kamsamida…:)
January 23rd, 2013 at 8:30 pm
@bella-87
If you are a sageuk fan, you should try it out . It has the same genre like The famous Jewel in the Place, Yi San and Dong Yi whereby the protagonist (in this case the hero was a horse doctor ) actually overcome many obstacles to become the greatest physician in Joseon era. The drama has strong casting and beautiful cinematography and directed by the famous Lee Byung Hoon who also directed the earlier three sageuk hits.
The main complaint I have is the length of the drama of at least 50 eps which means you will have to endure the childhood stage ( the adult leads only came on board in ep 8) to be followed by many trials and obstacles thrown in our hero’s ways that at times I am so frustrated why the bad guys always win and have an upper hand ( lost count of how many times our hero get thrown into jail) .I have watched until ep 32 and they are still enjoyable with another time jump. There is also a romance plotline but the emphasis of the story is on the hero’s trials and tribulations to achieve his ambition of becoming a doctor. Do watch it if you have the patience for long historical dramas.
January 23rd, 2013 at 10:07 pm
@88
Sorry, typed too fast – I mean adult leads only appeared in ep 5 .

February 2nd, 2013 at 9:17 pm
This drama started to get more exciting when BGH returns to Korea and started to treat all the patients that were rejected by the hospital in ep 34. Everyone is so curious about the identity of this mysterious doctor who is so skillful. I think it is about time the protagonists should start to have upper hand and I can’t wait to see how BGH will carry out his revenge and bring down the evil antagonist, the Chief Physician.
Poor Lee Sang Woo, I started watching this drama because of him but he is so underutilized here and only seen as a helpless second lead who has unrequited love towards the female lead.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:30 pm
daebak!!!!!
February 7th, 2013 at 8:36 pm
Some lines from Princess Sookwhee’s favorite poem in episode #36. Though its translated almost literally and so the structure is somewhat wanting, still it is elegant and quite moving given her mood at the time:
“Time of meeting, time of parting,
Winds fade as flowers wait.”
“Time slowed ’til we met,
Even more in parting.”
“Spring winds abate,
but the flowers are waiting.”
Nice work from the writer and director.
February 10th, 2013 at 9:41 pm
Ep 37 belongs to the protagonists – BGH is finally getting his due recognition by the King and public, the evil antagonist lost the King’s trust and respect, his henchman is sent off to exile and the long awaited reunion between the lovers. What a rewarding episode for viewers who have waited so long to see how BGH make his comeback and take his revenge against LMH.
In this drama, the hero is loved by 3 ladies ie Jin Nyeong, the Princess and the widow. Although I ship the OTP, I feel sad for the Princess and the widow as they are so nice and really love BGH as deeply as Jin Nyeong.
However, since this is only ep37 with at least a dozen more eps to go, I think
the writer will throw in more conflicts which likely be the disclosure of Jin Nyeong’s true parentage to tear the couple apart and the medical challenge by the unknown doctor that appeared in last part of ep 37.

I just found that darksmurfsub povided high quality subs for this series. Superb and wonderful

February 21st, 2013 at 9:25 pm
I hope the writer don’t kill off the princess. She brightens the mood of this drama.
February 24th, 2013 at 10:24 pm
@naruto-97
In Korea, Queen of Ambition (QoA)managed to overtake this drama and ranked first last Tue. Been expecting the stiff competition from QoA given the fact that viewers may find the plot of this drama getting stale with never ending challenges been thrown towards our hero and antagonists still getting away with their crimes. We are already crossing 40 eps yet the backstory of baby swapping has yet to be unveiled… I find this quite frustrating. However, since I have already watched 80% of the show, I will continue to watch it until the end and hope MBC will not extend the show further.
March 6th, 2013 at 7:51 pm
I like this drama….now the question is will the queen mother allow Baek Gwang Hyun to treat her? Let’s just watched the next episode of this drama. 🙂
March 10th, 2013 at 12:55 am
The truth of switched birth was finally unveiled in ep 44. Lee Yoo Won was so good at crying. I was so moved by her tears when she discovered her true identity.
I am so angry at the stupid Queen Mother who was so class conscious. It will serve her right if she loses her life due to her reluctance to allow BGH from treating her just because she thought he was a horse doctor!
I think the next few weeks episodes will be exciting as we get to see the start of downfall of Lord Yi and the viceroy. I do worry about Jinyong’s fate now that her true identity is known. Hope the king will pardon her and free her up from slavery in order to end up together with BGH.
March 11th, 2013 at 9:19 am
I think this drama could have easily fit into 30 episodes. Nevertheless I’m enjoying it.
I always get the feeling with Lee Sang Woo’s character Song Ha (Ji Nyeong’s brother) that time is stretched. It’s as if the actor is waiting for the script to catch up. So he’s working hard at doing nothing before his next action moment.
Almost all the characters in this drama are likeable. It is hard not to feel sorry for Lee Myung Hwan who is headed for a unpleasant place. You almost feel like saying to him: “Dude, let it go.”
And Kim Chan Wan as the Viceroy is precious. His facial contortions are amazing. At times I swear the dude’s a chimp. He’s soft-spoken for sure yet not someone you’d get on the wrong side of.
I was against Lee Yo Won as Ji Nyeong. I didn’t like her acting in any of her previous dramas. But here she pulled this off.
Cho Seung Woo, what magic he brings to the screen. One can’t imagine any other actor as Kwanghyun.
March 14th, 2013 at 1:49 pm
great drama!!!
March 14th, 2013 at 10:28 pm
Ah Princess Sukwhi. What a wonderful depiction of what is an exemplary human being, untainted by her royal status and in whose young heart rests the best of our virtues.
Thank you writer-nim.

One more episode. I guess we’ll see the marriage of the good doctor no doubt. Or he could marry the princess and Ji Nyeong as concubine. Nah..the dudes’s a one gal only kinda guy.
March 23rd, 2013 at 12:49 am
Ep 49 – What a satisfying episode! We finally see the recognition given to our hero after saving the King when all had given up hope. He was promoted to the highest order and appointed as Royal Physician. It was so gratifying to see the protagonists been rewarded after countless trials and challenges.
Looking forward to see more happiness scenes in the closure episodes with the marriage between our OTP but would expect the couple to face initial resistance from the nobles first. Pity Lee Sang Woo, he will end up lonely – I wish the writer had paired him off with either the Princess or the lovely widow.
March 26th, 2013 at 1:57 am
You r kidding! Another drama in which Lee Sang Woo ends up Not getting the girl!
Come on. He needs to headline a drama in which he plays a straight guy (Not a gay one as in Life is Beautiful), cheerful and upbeat (unlike his char in FOTGs), romancing a single girl (not a married woman as in First Wives Club) who loves him back (unlike what’s the name of that drama?, Desperate sth), n live happily ever after!
March 26th, 2013 at 1:58 am
p.s. The title of that last drama should be Don’t Hesitate.
March 26th, 2013 at 9:13 am
I watched the last episode last night, and I liked how the story had ended. But at the same time I feel sad because I can not see those artist whom I’ve grown to liked. I just hoped that this drama will be aired in the Philippines soon. Congratulations to the casts & staff of this drama for giving us a good drama to watch. 🙂
March 26th, 2013 at 9:48 pm
@KDaddict
Yes, Lee Sang Woo did not get the girl in this drama. He was the second male lead but there was no competition at all as the writer had already planned for the heroine to fall for the male lead from the onset. Poor him, there was so little screen time for him in the latter episodes.
My overall verdict for this drama is good and satisfying and on par with the directors’ earlier masterpieces like Jewel in the Palace, Yi San and Dong Yi. The only complaint is that the writer was focusing too much on the main character at the expense of all the great supporting casts.
March 27th, 2013 at 10:33 am
I’m ok with the ending though I much rather the happy couple and offspring spend a whole episode in one location with extended family and friends. The people who brought the two together provided the warmth in this drama — Princess Sukwhi and entourage, Kwangyeon’s adopted horse doctor family, colleagues who stood by him, the restaurateur and nurses.
I had enough of accupunture needles and didn’t need to see another even as a symbolic gesture in the final scene. 🙂
March 27th, 2013 at 3:19 pm
On second thoughts, the ending was so-so bordering on lack-lustre.
Thinking back to Ji Nyung’s line near the end: “He’s doing what he does best.”.
He was “doing what he does best” throughout the entire drama. Did we need more of it? What we needed at the end was some “sugar”. No, not the hollywood sleeze kind.
At the very least the actress might have appeared joyous knowing her husband is contented. Instead I got the sense Ji Nyung feels a little deprived. Eh.. ‘s Not how you end a drama writer-nim.
You did a similar thing with Dong Yi and Yi San. It is like ending on a flat note.
March 28th, 2013 at 12:20 am
A most enjoyable Kdrama!
Great acting, great script, great period costumes, great scenery and always entertaining!
What else can I tell you?
That’s about it for now!
April 11th, 2013 at 9:50 pm
I only watched up to episode 7. Looking at the rating, no doubt this is a good drama. However my dissatisfaction lies at the female lead. I think she’s too old for the guy, looks like same age with Mdm Doctor. Perhaps she could act, but she just do not suited to become a love interest of the male lead. She’s too lanky and for a Korean actress, she’s not that eye catching either.
Always, this is a major flaw with Korean drama…the storyline is good, but wrong choice of actors for main lead.
I will continue watching this drama because of the rating, but with heavy heart. Not looking forward for thei lov story.
April 11th, 2013 at 11:43 pm
I luv dis drama
April 22nd, 2013 at 3:40 pm
Lee Yo Won was born on April 9, 1980 and Cho Seung Woo was born on Feb. 12, 1980.
Great drama!
April 22nd, 2013 at 10:15 pm
This drama was noteworthy with its scenes of surgery.
But how can Baek Gwang Hyun forgive so easily Lee Myung Hwan ? Lee Myung Hwan could suffer a little more before he dies. Can love really forgive the murderers of ours parents and ours ennemis because we love their child ?
It doesn’t seem realistic…
But only the writer decides. Every viewer has his own opinion.

Finally watched this drama. I love that evil didn’t always win in this drama–similar to the way the writer wrote Dong Yi and Yi San. However, for me, I liked the Princess a lot more than I liked the lead female. The lead female character seems a little boring. I also just didn’t feel the romance between her and the lead–there was zero chemistry between them. I enjoyed this drama for the medical story…..and the princess who is hilarious at times.
December 29th, 2016 at 6:06 am
One other thing. This drama, like all historical dramas, makes one thing clear for me–I would never have wanted to work for any of the royals in the palace. These people have no common, reasonable or logical sense. They act like doctors are gods and can decide if a person live or die….stupid.
December 29th, 2016 at 6:03 pm
@118, I agree with you totally. I couldn’t buy the love in this drama that the lead couple had for each other…it just seemed like two people who said they love each other. In Dong Yi, I knew the King loved Dong Yi and she him. I loved the way they interacted with each other. In this drama. I just didn’t feel it and I thought the murderous Lee Myung Hwan got away too easily in the forgiveness arena. I think this is why this drama didn’t get the recognition as this writer’s other work. Nor the drama that followed.
December 30th, 2016 at 10:16 am
He should let the queen die with her hateful prejudices against the ‘commoners’.
December 30th, 2016 at 8:16 pm
Over all, I really liked this drama, but it’s not up to the same quality of Dong Yi or Yi San. It was tiring to see characters run in calling a person’s name with news to share, then they switched the scene–it happened so much it became very noticeable. I was in Dong Yi, but nothing like this. Also, towards the last 10 episodes, the story really didn’t make much sense.
I really never felt for the lead female. I truly think the writer made her almost a side character. She was very skilled in the beginning–I don’t know what happened to her skills as the drama progressed…seems like they disappeared.
The princess, from the very beginning to the end remained my favorite character. She had such a good moral core and an understanding heart. She breath life into his drama….loved her character.

We have been watching this show since it came on and have really
enjoyed it very much, we were wondering where they film this at so
that we could go and visit the site, this makes about the 15th time we
have seen the series. It is very well done and very interesting to
watch, even tho we don’t speak or understand Korean, I wish there
was so way that we could maybe get in English, also the songs are
really pretty my husband just loves the music. Sometimes watching it
we get what they are talking about, but miss alot that is going on.

I really enjoy “The King’s Doctor” K-drama series because it tells us about the meaning of efforts and achievements in saving the human and animal patients alike as a surgeon/herbalist/acupuncturist.
Doctor Baek Gwang Hyun and Nurse Kang Ji Nyung have good on-screen chemistry, even when they were still preteens, they look adorable as buddies. They enjoy each other company. Their smiles and happiness are priceless. Also, the actor/actress, Mr. Jo Seung Woo/Miss Lee Yo Won, seem to be comfortable working with animals. It is so heartwarming seeing them working with all the beautiful horses and other farm animals.
There is Love Triangle or rather three sided love triangle in “the King’s Doctor”. However, the second lead female (Princess Suk Hwi) and the second lead male (Lord Lee Sung Ha) characters have good hearts and do not destroy the first male/female lead characters. That is the beauty of friendships between Nurse Ji Nyung and Princess Suk Hwi, and Lord Lee Sung Ha’s true love for Ji Nyung.
I find Nurse Jang In Joo is a benevolent and altruistic character, she is so lovely and classy. I cannot wait to see Nurse In Joo appearing on the screen. Nurse In Joo steals the show in her compassionate and calm manner.
I thought the character Apprentice Yoon Tae Joo (Mr. Jang Hee Woong) would steal the show like Legolas in “The Lord of the Rings” or Scholar/Warrior TalTal in “Empress Ki”. Apprentice Tae Joo’s initial appearance as a top student/his good look is an instant eye catcher, however, the script does not allow him to shine. At least he wins Nurse So Ga Young’s heart at the end.
A happy ending for both Royal Physician Baek Gwang Hyun and Nurse Kang Ji Nyung, a match made in heaven. I hope they make more historical K-drama series like this one, about the lives of ordinary people.
