SO FAR I LOVE IT.GREAT CAST AND AN EXCELLENT ACTING.
August 24th, 2009 at 2:16 am
I just finished watching episode 5, the drama keeps getting better and better. I don’t understand the low rating, but I am actually loving this more than Lady Castle aka My fair lady and I was waiting for that show for months on end.
Can’t wait for episode 6.

I think it’s more popular in Seoul because people there are more open minded than in the rest of the country. Having a western leading male on TV is a big jump for most Koreans. In fact, I don’t think it’s ever been done in Japan or China–so Korea might be first in this case.
September 5th, 2009 at 12:47 am
yes, I agreed this drama are getting better and better.
It is surprised -Im Ju Hwan – are so good. I love his actting, cool and cute.
Seo Woo are so loverly.
Yes, It is better than Lady Castle.

MBC MADE A DICISION TO CUT 4 EPISODE FROM THIS EXCELLENT
DRAMA. I’M SO DISAPPOINTED AND IT’S MAKE ME SAD.
BECAUSE THE LOW RAITING IN KOREA MBC MADE THIS DICISION
BUT THEY SHOULD CONSIDER THE OUTSIDER VIEWERS THAT LOVE THIS DRAMA SO MUCH.
September 5th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
I am upset about the episodes being cut as well. I’ve been enjoying Tamra so much, I was actually shocked by the news. I was hoping MBC would change its mind but it looks like they are sticking with the decision. What a shame.
September 6th, 2009 at 1:18 am
me too.
MBC should have more confidence with this drama.
This is such a good drama compare with the others only repeat old story
with famous stars to attract viewers.
This dramas’ actors are new are play really good and story are good too.
—
Feel very sorry for MBC’s stupid decision.

September 7th, 2009 at 9:50 am
I love this drama so much, it’s not fair to the actors as they are so good.
I hope MBC will not cut the episodes, even the ratings in Korea is bad it doesn’t mean the outside viewers have the same view, we all love this drama!!!!
September 7th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
PLEASE PLEASE DON’T CUT THE EPISODES I’M SO IN LOVE WITH THE
CAST AND THIS WONDERFUL DRAMA.
September 11th, 2009 at 4:28 am
I have been watching the drama an it is so good, I agree that it is not the same story like others. I had to admit that I’ve watched many of these series, at the begining they were awesome but then it was the same romance thing, so I was about to quit with these dramas until I found this one. It’s a pitty that they decided to cut the episodes, and as you said before they should concider outside viewers.
September 24th, 2009 at 11:40 am
I’m watching in LA on MySoju and You Tube… this drama is surprisingly funny, romantic and has an interesting story line. I find it well written, and the beautifully filmed. I’ve fallen in love with the cast, however, I do find the character of William a little feminine for a lead male role. He is (Hwang Chan Bin) easy on the eyes…;)
October 5th, 2009 at 10:28 am
have watched the first 2eps….found it interesting enough and entertaining though some of the leads are just newbies….will probably finished it if I find enough time again….

September 7th, 2010 at 12:09 pm
I like the Effects and cinematography….world class…
I agree that for the past years that im watching korean series ive never seen one in a sense that since it is a period genre I expected that it would be a hardcore drama or light drama i suppose….
But it was an adventure,exciting,adorable…
One comment only ive watch several k-series with korean-american cast and they never got the chance to be the one Like (spring waltz, kim sam soon and the like)…Ive been expecting that the cliche` would be broken…I wish it would be William will win the heart of the seagirl at the end but sort of dissappointing but still ok…
I like the cast too cute….
aja aja fighting…
September 13th, 2010 at 6:35 pm
i like this drama….lovely
October 2nd, 2010 at 7:57 pm
the girl is so funny…and william is so cute with his korean.i only saw the first episode and yes is really funny i like it.
October 10th, 2010 at 1:54 am
I saw the 1st episode, it’s a funny drama and especially it doesn’t look like the others dramas, it is a new kind, mixing the fantasy, the history, the comedy, Romance, the Jeju’s island, and especially offering a leading part to a Frenchman actor hihihi ! (Pierre you’re the best )
October 16th, 2010 at 12:31 am
waw.wanna see this drama..
October 27th, 2010 at 12:53 am
After reading all the good comments here I tried to watch the first episode of this drama. Maybe I was expecting too much but after watching the first episode, I felt that it was kinda boring. Some parts were a little bit corny but I admit that there are also some parts that I laugh, especially the scene were the lead actress asks the name of the foreign guy and vise versa.

ya like everyone said here… I was a bit skeptical about watching this drama.. but I said I’ll give it a try. theres soo much fun… if you like mystery, romance, comedy, action or thriller you must watch this drama. I usually skips some scenes but in this drama I couldnn’t do that because every scene too good to past out. there was a lot gross moment but its a laugh-out-loud funny.
I highly recomend.
September 18th, 2011 at 4:26 am
oh to add more, the languages they used its pretty entertainting…lol! I should say it pretty convincing!!
September 18th, 2011 at 10:34 pm
this is sort of the ancient korean version of “baywatch”… wherein baywatch you see lots of bikinis and men with great abs – sixpacks.. here you see the women in that specific diving outfit.. and is it really – that in films usually people (actors/ess) with not so “easy on the eyes” looks are casted as being the ones with negative attitudes..? (you can see it’s being done here) if so, that is kind of stereotyping..although perhaps the purpose is sort of “emphasizing negativism” , stereotyping is not really a fair thing..
September 24th, 2011 at 9:14 pm
i like this dramaaa very much… ohhhh, park kyuuu… u are sooo cool and hansome… beo jin u are so cuuteee…. william is not good for me. now its airing in my countryyy!!! =)
September 24th, 2011 at 11:40 pm
i think seo woo was rightly casted and did a good job as jang beo jin, irritating, naive, silly if not a bit stupid – as yan kawamura’s comment of her : stupid people live long (hahaha) – and so on… and so is the other actors who played park kyu, william spencer…etc..
beo jin seems to always trip, falls down, letting out a sound when she is not supposed to… just doing anything contrary to the right thing..
i also wonder about the culture where it is the wife who is the provider of the family, instead of the husband/father…
September 28th, 2011 at 12:12 pm
1 love this drama.. hillarious also entertaining
from now on IM JU HWAN will be my fav..
keep on and AJA AJA FIGHTING…

March 11th, 2012 at 9:37 pm
This is an interesting show. It is so diff fr others. After 4 eps, it’s still had to pigeonhole it!
The girl, Seo Woo has an exotic beauty, not your typical Korean look.
William, however, isn’t a good actor. It looks like this might be his first acting job.
Wow, to curse sb’s soul to rot in hell (#90) for their dislike of an actress!!! That’s Real Scary!
March 12th, 2012 at 2:19 am
Ep 6:
Those two r really cute: the low class diver girl n the exiled scholar. Hope to see more of the two of them together. It’s impossible betwn her n William for sure. Inter-racial relationship in 17th century Joseon just couldn’t be.
The scholar has class, smarts n dignity. She has heart, cuteness and bubbly-ness! They complement each other well.
March 12th, 2012 at 1:44 pm
This is a curious show. It really takes a few eps b4 one can find out what it is abt. Here is
A proper synopsis:
Back in Joseon times, Jeju Island, called Tamna (somehow mistakenly romanized as Tamra) had to pay tribute, in kind, to the king. They included valuables such as horse, abalones, sea cucumbers, ginseng, etc. Lately, much of the tributes had been stolen repeatedly. So the king sent royal investigators to look into the matter.
Enter Park Kyu, a royal scholar disguised as a nobleman exiled for having harassed women in Hanyang. He has to live w the family of the leader of divers, who has a really cute daughter, Beo Jin. (BTW, the family has a 2nd daughter played by Kim Yoo Jung, the girl who plays the young Yeon Woo soo well in Moon Embracing the Sun).
A young Englishman is shipwrecked on Tamra w a Japanese sailer. Beo Jin finds the Englishman n being kind hearted n curious, she decides to help him in his hiding place, so that he wouldn’t be handed to the authorities n probably be killed in those days of xenophobia. These two take a liking to each other.
Park Gyu, while living in close qtrs w Beo Jin, sees her for the loving n bubbly girl that she is, n develops feelings for her. He helps her out each time she n the Englishman face danger of being exposed. Meanwhile, he carries out an investigation of a case of stolen treasures, which turns out to be much more complicated and convoluted than meets the eye. It involves a whole host of chars fr the local govt sec, to the local sage, directors of a merchant house and even the East India Trading Co.! Great combination of romance, investigation, sageuk, and exotica!

@KDaddict-92
Yes, Seo Woo has a natural and fresh beauty whilst Park Kyu is handsome and so smart and this couple has wonderful chemistry. I am also not drawn to William and feel that he is the weakest lead in this show. Hence, I totally shipped SW with PK from the onset.
By the way, do watch the full 21 episodes instead of the 16 eps as mentioned earlier. MBC butchered and chopped of some parts of the later episodes due to low rating which resulted in abrupt or missing storyline.
March 12th, 2012 at 10:38 pm
tc,
I’m watching this on dramacrazy. On half of the eps, it stops loading all of a sudden. You’ve to reload all over again. But it Only has 16 eps. You’ve any idea where I might find the full 21 ep version?
I’m at 8 eps already. N really like it.
March 12th, 2012 at 11:49 pm
I’m Not fond of Beo Jin’s tendency to make noises when sb is in hiding with her. 1. When Park Gyo was in High Preist room w her; 2. When Park Gyo was watching over the High Priest hideout in the mtns. 3. When William n her were hiding inside the windmill when High Priest assistant was killing the secretary. It’d be nice if she could keep her mouth shut for 2 seconds! Not a v bright girl is she?
March 13th, 2012 at 1:25 am
IN Ep 9,
All Beo Jin cares abt is William. She pleads w Park Gyu to save his life, once, twice, every chance she gets. She never once said goodbye to him, not even at the pier. I get it! She is in love w William. So later on how can she change her feelings so completely n love PG instead? Wouldn’t that be a flip flop?
William already has platinum blonde hair. They use v heavy theatrical make-up on him. Plus his acting is so stiff for many eps. It all adds up to a feeling that he is not real. I can’t take William seriously, or their love.
March 13th, 2012 at 3:44 am
tc-94,
I can’t find the 21 ep version. Can u help?
I finished ep 11 already.
March 13th, 2012 at 9:18 am
@KDaddict-98
Sorry, I watched the show quite sometime back and can’t remember which website anymore. I tried to find the longer version via online and was unsuccessful as well. If you can’t find it, then likely it has been removed since the drama was aired quite a while ago. I know the DVD has the full version though.
March 13th, 2012 at 6:49 pm
@tc,
Hi, I found the longer version. No worry. I’m anxious to start watching it. It’s longer by 1/3. I’m sure it’d be nuanced.
Gosh, what’s with the heavy eye-makeup and ruby red lipstick on William? That’s looks v unnatural against his platinum blonde hair.
March 13th, 2012 at 10:09 pm
oh i really love this show.. i really really love it.. i;m still on ep7 part 3..hu
March 13th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
i love william but i love you more park kyu
March 13th, 2012 at 10:15 pm
Was Park Gyu a ladies man b4 he met Beo Jin? His mother said sth abt that, didn’t she? That it wasn’t his fault, that all the girls throw themselves at him.
Oh, FINALLY, there r a few cute moments betwn them, when they fall into the lake together m when they run thru the night market together. He even carries her on his back at the end of ep 15/21.
For 3/4 of this show, Beo Jin only has eyes for William. I’m curious to see how she’ll come to love Park Gyu instead. In the shorter version, I think it’ll be abrupt n unconvincing. I hope that change of heart is handled properly in the long version.
The networks sometimes cut short a show w low ratings. They just won’t film as many eps as planned. But here is a show that has already filmed 21 eps, n the network only decided to show 16 of them! What a waste all around!
March 14th, 2012 at 7:12 pm
@KDaddict -103
I don’t think Park Kyu was such person but he was definitely a catch and all the noble families wanted him as their son in law.
I lost count of times when I felt Park Kyu’s frustration and heartbreak when Beo Jin ignored him and only had eyes for William. William became more possessive and annoying towards the later episodes which made me root for Park Kyu more.

@tc,
As I watched more eps, I come to know Park Gyu better, n realize that he wasn’t such a person. It was his mother’s “misconception” n bragging.
I’m done! I like ep 21 just fine, but fr ep 12 on, I actually don’t like Beo Jin v much, for always only having eyes for William, n breaking PG’s heart, like u say, for wavering betwn them to give PG hope n therefore more pain, for misunderstanding PG–how dare she say to her mother that PG was always mean to her when all she ever did was make him jealous n hurt? And I don’t like her for never listening to PG n then always getting in trouble, which then also puts PG in trouble when he has to bail her out. She is definitely cute to look at, but too young to understand n make much sense. Not my kind of heroine.
I don’t like William either. His makeup n platinum blonde hair makes him scary. I think that’s deliberate. And he is a boring person anyway. He has a one tracked mind that doesn’t consider for a moment what life will be like for BJ if she really leaves Tamra. He n BJ r both really immature, n hence the attraction. But this KD is diff fr all the rest. I’d have enjoyed it more if there were more cute moments betwn KG n BJ. 😉
What else do u recommend?

Wow, that’s fast, you managed to finish watching the show in less than a week!
Do u mean sageuk? Some of these came to my mind:
-Kim So Roo ( if u like Ji Sung)
-Dong Yi
-Jejoongwon
-Joseon X-files
The first two have romance story lines as well but Dong Yi gets draggy towards the later part due to extension from 50 to 60 eps! The latter two dramas are more serious and have good plot. If you like SIG, you should watch Jumong and Kingdom of Winds. And don’t forget Jennie’s recommended sageuk, Ballad of Seo Dong!

@tc Hi, tc, how are you?
@KDaddict Hihi, with re to Ballad, still on the look out. Hardly have time to go to the shops when I am back there on weekends but will def get it for you once I get the time. I actually saw a VCD version here in KL but I don’t think you’ll be interested in that, right? I am actually thinking of uploading it on Viki via YT since it’s no longer available online but that will be only be if I cant find it in SG but no worries, I def remember seeing it in the shops in Dec.

@tc,
Hi, finishing 20 (21) eps in 3 Ds is nothing, as u well know! I actually took it easy this time n took 5 Ds. 4 eps/D, pc of cake!
I neither particularly like nor dislike sageuk. Other factors r more impt. I’ve an aversion to l-o-n-g dramas tho, 60 eps! I’ve yet to see a KD that is worth every ep at that length. If there is no compelling reason, I prefer to stay away fr those.
I saw Jumong when it came out. Also saw Kingdom of Winds. Don’t understand its allure, as I’m not a Moonie. Oh no, hers is Painter of Winds. Got confused for a min. 😉 Saw bits of Dong Yi. Saw Joseon X files. It’s interesting n diff.
@Jennie,
Hi, thx 4 remembering my request for SeoD. Whenever u get around to it.
Hey, as ur posts on rooftop Pr n KPop Survival show, u know so much abt KPop, its videos, Plus u watch many KDs. U have a job n a family. Do u sleep at all? 😉

I must admit I came to watch historical dramas because of a personal interest in the values of those times. How they compare to our own today. Not to say these dramas hold to historical accuracy, but they do offer up many treasures and insights, and therefore in my opinion, important contributions to the arts. Tamra Island unfortunately is not one of them.
I enjoyed Dong Yi, Yi San and King Guenchogo among others. There were wonderful philosophical and social-political references that choked me up. Such history has much that our own leaders can learn from and fail to do so. My hat off to the writers for doing the research and for knowing the importance of putting it out there. Your sublime effort is appreciated by at least this viewer.

OK, I realize this is an old show, but Netflix just put it up and I stumbled on it. OMG, this thing is so engaging — funny, poignant, thrilling, mysterious, goofy in places, but I am really enjoying the acting and the historical costumes. I’m hooked. Bring on some more!!

This could be a cool show if not for the lead woman. She gets on my very last nerve could she already be killed off please, murk her dumb ass like yesterday.
