The story is set in Joseon Korea, primarily during the reign of Seonjo. The story covers a time that is approximately 50 years after the death of Dae Jang Geum (the reputed first female doctor of Joseon Korea). It depicts the dramatic life of historical figure Heo Joon who wrote the oriental medical textbook “Donguibogam” and became physician for King Seonjo. Kim Joo Hyuk will plays Heo Joon in this drama.

Yoo Ui Tae (Baek Yoon Shik) plays Heo Jun’s mentor who is the single greatest influence in his life. Meanwhile, Ye jin Ah (Park Jin Hee) plays a lady who lost her parents at a young age but was raised by Yoo Ui Tae, and grows up learning medicine from him as well. Like the cast. Hope the story is good as well.

  2. 2 : djk Says:

COME ON GUYS!! THIS DRAMA NEEDS LOVE.. Seriously , listen, this is an non ”idol-dramas” this drama is about a REAL man who gone through difficulties.. And this drama will be a great lesson FOR EVERYONE AROUND THE WORLD! I think it’ll be meaningful and make you to never give up. So, i hope that non of you underrate this drama because of it’s episodes (120), all of them will be worth watching.

  3. 3 : Rel Says:

Oh wow… I was such a huge fan of Heo Jun back when it aired in 1999. I still listen to the OST every now and then.

One of the funniest BTS from the drama back then was the (lack of a) height difference between the male actor that played Heo Jun and the female actress that played his love interest. She was fairly tall, so she had to stoop/slouch when they were in the same scene or the actor would have to stand on a brick… XD

So glad that they’re remaking!! Hoping this one turns out as good and successful as the original~

I will watching it and I hope eomma Mi Sook will shine in her role

I love eomma so much. Eomma hwating

  8. 8 : Ttuk Says:

Mi-yeon’s death brought the reality of Heo Joon’s life as a half slave half noble into full focus. It’s a lot of weight for a child finding out his father’s protection do not extend towards the people Heo Jun loves.

Anyone noticed the girl who died in the snow bares some semblance to Ingrid Bergman the silver screen diva?

I’m not too thrilled about the adult Heo Joon. The kid version had charm only matched by Won Bin, who would have made a better adult Heo Jun.

  9. 9 : Py Says:

Yes, I am also disappointed with Kim Joo Hyuk playing the adult Heo Joon. He looks too old for the part. Spoils the whole drama, such a pity.
(P/S The young Heo Joon is gorgeous.)

  10. 10 : Micc Says:

I agreed. Kim Joo Hyuk looks really old. I think they should have 3 people playing the child, the youth, and then Kim should play the adult Heo Joon.

I do agree with this comment a drama was destroy with this men….I was into but after I see him really desapointed…….they should have pick some one for teneger age..and then him later on..but a jump from kid to this old guy, not good at all….too bad will not continue watshing, I am desapointed!!!

  12. 12 : Vaste Says:

Carmen, he will grow soon, be patient! Amaizing drama and story!

  13. 13 : Ttuk Says:

One problem I have with Kim Joo Hyuk as the lead is when he relaxes his face it looks like melting wax. Not picking on the guy, but shouldn’t casting have some sense of aesthetics?

And there’s no chemistry with any of his female leads in all his dramas. So why, why, weh, weh?

But…. I’m going to watch this cos I like so many in the cast who yet to appear. Some very good actors to draw out the “sweet” from the story hopefully.

  14. 14 : Ttuk Says:

Wow, 33 kinds of water and my local government gives us chlorinated & fluoridated water. I want local minister to proclaim on national TV, 3 times: “I am a dick-head.”. Then take away the poisonous water. :)

  15. 15 : Micc Says:

Hahaha! Ttuk, you are right! :-)

  16. 16 : Wila Says:

This film version of the series Dr Hur June (Jun Kwang Ryul) were made in 1999-2000, right? I ever watched the series but did not complete …. but thankfully, with this new version, I can see this story through to completion. Thank you.

  17. 17 : Ahjussi2012 Says:

Lawdy Miss Clawdy!!! Wow!! This drama is unbelievably good. I was captivated from the 1st episode. I just finished ep. 16 & the script and acting is still fresh & riveting. That must be some kinda record. I’m interested to see if they will be able to continue this level of excellence. My biggest hurdle will be to stick with it for 120 eps. as I have commitment phobia.

I agree that it was a major guffaw of the casting director to allow KJH to play the role of a teenager, as he is far too mature (in looks & age) for the part. But I decided to use the gift of imagination to blot out his real age and “pretend” he was a teen. The story line is just too good to allow aesthetics to get in the way or becuz we were basically asked to stretch credulity (to the breaking point.).

Kang Han Byul was very, very good as the young Hur Jun as was Kim So Yun’s appealing precociousness in her role. I hope they will be nominated for “Best Couple”, as they will surely get my vote. ;)

I look forward to new episodes & hope the good scripts will continue. I wait with avid & panting anticipation. Fighting!!

  18. 18 : Ahjussi2012 Says:

I liked how Yoo Ui Tae diagnosed Jin Ah’s illness. He takes her pulse and says: “Her illness comes from her heart. She will get better..”

When I go to see my GP, he sends me for a blood test, then an ultra-sound. A week or so later, in a second consultation he tells me there’s nothing wrong with me. Then the bill.

I went to the Chinese doctor, he took my pulse and in seconds prescribes the herbs I needed. Problem solved, no fuss. The bill was significantly smaller. I didn’t have to drive all over town burning fuel.

You’d think our government would pursue a proper integration of Oriental medicine into our healthcare. I imagine, based on my actual case scenario such a hybrid health system would lower the financial burden on the nation (medicare).

  24. 24 : Vakt Says:

I didn’t realize Nam Goong Min oppa is on this drama… :) i want to watch this.

  32. 32 : katy Says:

i like the old one than this one , i like the main actor better
more realistic , more believable than this one ,
their attire in the new are ridiculous , as they are on stage ,
no real especially @ public hosp , all nurses dress so nice , how can they work in those outfit , always too clean , too new .

  33. 33 : Ttuk Says:

Episode 67, Lady Ye Jin Ah is now a nurse. Nurses it seems are at times called on to double as courtesans. I guess it happens when there’s an influx of horny ageing aristocrats.

The magistrate’s words to her are amongst the best in this drama. Such eloquence is not to be found in try-hard modern romantic dramas. I was moved and surprised at such fine writing. Simple, and a perfect fit.

    Here’s to you writer-nim. Daebak!

  34. 34 : Ttuk Says:

The whole pus sucking thing was off-putting and undermines the efficacy of the Choseon medical system.

Couldn’t they have adapted a suction devise from the bellows used by blacksmiths? Or adapted a harmonium — to be found along the silk route — for such a purpose? I wonder why the physician would resort to such a dangerous practise?

It seems their extensive knowledge of the various types of waters do not extend to the most basic understanding of the alimentary canal and deadly pathogens found is pus-filled wounds. Yet they sported surgical masks during some medical procedures.

Is there really 33 kinds of waters? The claim that this drama is drawing from authentic historical archives is looking like a load of kaka. Heh.

  35. 35 : Ttuk Says:

Scriptwriter Choi Wan Kyu, my hat off to you sir/madam.

All these characters are wonderful. I especially like Park Eun Bin’s Da Hee. So sweet, so beautifully portrayed.

It is said by some leading economists that the prosperity of a nation is due to the family unit. You mess with that institution, you’d have opened the door to economic instability.

Heo Jun’s family was not learned like our modern day economists, but they certainly were situated firmly in realization of such wisdom.

  36. 36 : djan Says:

    Ttuk: Is this drama good?

  37. 37 : Ttuk Says:

    #36 @djan

My answer to your question may not help you in your decision Djan as I am a period drama fan.

However the things I dislike most about this drama are:
1 – The lead actor. A failure in the casting.
2 – The theme music with the operatic female voice, like the lead actor is wholly wrong and inappropriate.

Yet these failings in the production did not deter me from watching because the writer has painted characters that are poignant and exemplary.

  38. 38 : Ttuk Says:

Da Hee gets sweeter by the episode.

And I really like the actress. I hope to see a lot more of her work in future.

  39. 39 : djan Says:

    Thanks. i’ll check it out

  40. 40 : Nudge Says:

Do Ji’s relationship with his mother is strange. He shows almost no interest in his own wife.

  41. 41 : Valkyrie1939 Says:

This drama is my summer drama it has a little bit of everything. A nice guy was made to drink poison. A nurse got Do-Jin in trouble and he was banished to China, he is back now and still trying to best heo jun. I am anticipating a big down fall.

  42. 42 : Valkyrie1939 Says:

Do-Jin is the text book ‘MAMA’s BOY’. She bought him his position as a doctor. He never pays any attention to his wife, but he smiled and held her hand once when he want her father (a minister) to help his career. He is also still hung up about Ye-Jin and blame Jun for her not returning his feelings.

  43. 43 : Nudge Says:

Yes. Do Jin’s one sorry SOB. The situation between him and Jun reminds me of that old saying: “Dogs will bark, but the caravan moves on”.

Do-Jin is doing all the barking while Jun shows no interest whatsoever in playing his game.

@Valkyrie1939 “MAMA’s BOY” is the perfect description.

  44. 44 : tim Says:

Does anyone know the song with the woman/mans opera voice and i believe the instrumental version as well? They dont show up as ost because the osts are by park wan kyu and bmk

  45. 45 : Marian Something Says:

There are so many added characters in this drama which were not mentioned at all in the cast. Please update, we want to know who plays who .

  46. 46 : Nudge Says:

Episode #117 we see how real men, men with honour, courage, dignity and respect, behave towards one another when they come to realise their transgressions.

    Exemplary human behaviour.

#45 @Marian I had looked for any info on the uncredited actors but didn’t find any. A Korean speaking individual might have better luck. I believe this production is funded by the Tourism Board (??) of South Korea. And thank God some people in government still have the common decency to invest public funds wisely. Lol.

  47. 47 : Ring Says:

The lead actor keeps speaking in lower lower -> to deep low tone since he became a royal doctor it is not natural and some what is annoying so I decided stop watching this drama…

  48. 48 : Nudge Says:

@Ring, yea the actor isn’t suited to the part anyway. He doesn’t commit emotionally rather intellectualises the role — so bad at it I might add.

Indeed he’s doing much the same things he did in a previous drama, though the characters are very different. One a gladiator and this one a physician. You’d expect two different treatments of these characters by Mr. Kim, but not so. They are the same-oh, same-oh boring treatment.

All one can say is: who thought it a good idea to hire this guy?

  49. 49 : Ttuk Says:

    Beautiful ending.

Kudos to the production. Beautifully told and nicely executed.

  50. 50 : Ally. Says:

i am interested to watch this drama , how to watch it ?? or how to download the episods. please somebody can tell me.

  51. 51 : Iris Says:

I just finished marathoning it…. Loved it so much… Absolutely one of the best this year.. I wonder what the ratings were like? Superb acting by all, but especially, Kim Joo Hyuk in the title role…. I am surprised and disappointed he did not get a prize for this performance..

  52. 52 : Sayahomis Says:

Really Beautiful drama, Its The best.

  53. 53 : SAi Says:

does anyone know the instrumental song that usually is at the end of an episode?
it actually has a lady singing in it but its not by BMK or park wan kyu

  55. 55 : Autumn Grace Says:

I suppose this is the best drama for the year 2013 (well, as far as I have watched). The story line is good and the performance of the lead characters are remarkable. The phasing is not boring considering I’ve already watched the previous Hur Jun and I am quite familiar with the flow of the story. The director and the script writer are commendable. Two thumbs up for all the effort. Keep it up.

It’ just a sad to know that this drama did not get a high rating.

  56. 56 : Ssendawula Issa Says:

I have watched up to 54 episode, though i wanted to see up to the end am not sure whether i will see them because someone must have pirated those episodes.

The extraordinary drama ended on Wednesday 29th October 2014. For almost a year I was at home dot at 7.00PM. A fantastic serial to watch with excellent dubbing in Hindi. I have missed quite a few episodes initially because of ignorance. I am at pain that the glorious serial ended. It added value to my life.

Request DD Bharati to restart telecasting some time in 2015, preferably from January itself with a bit of advertisement for wider communication .A must see for every student studying medicine as well as practicing doctors.Compared to serials aired these days, this is one of its kind that the entire family can watch together.

Need to know where to find the all episode DVD. Any movie on the subject with english subtitle? Any book ?

Hats off to DD Bharati. They deserve national award for their exploration of the subject, dubbing and telecasting the drama that produces far reaching impact on Indo Korean relationship. DD Bharati should invite the team of actors to India for some kind of felicitations
