Synopsis

The lives of pedeatricians who battle daily to help children and their families’ happiness.

Few people are aware of the fact that the pedeatric ward exists seperately. Regardless, the hardworking individuals there steadfastly deliver on their promise to give their very best. They face arduous challenges daily ranging from surgery on tiny preterm infants as tiny as a pen and on fetuses. These doctors perform amazing feats day in and day out.

“Good Doctor” deals with the struggles and triumphs of pediatricians who are devoted to the cause of saving young lives. Also highlighted in the drama are social issues like medical insurance systems that are flawed and the hospital systems that are geared towards profiteering rather than saving lives, which ultimately affects the working environment of pediatricians.

The show will also throw some important questions along the way as the story unfolds such as “What should grown ups do for the betterment of our children.” The children in the pediatric ward are our children, nephews and more. “Good Doctor” seeks to help make the world a brighter place for the children. I think joowon deserve daesang for kbs award 2013. Despite his brilliant performance for his difficult role as autistic savant which getting praise from expert, netizen, and media, Good Doctor win competition which same timeslot with (1) Goddess of Fire which moon geun young as lead actress has won daesang few years ago for her role in painter of wind, (2) Golden of Empire which son hyunjoo as lead actor has won daesang for his role in the chaser and they have team up again with same writer and director, and (3) suspicious houskeeper which remake from popular jdrama mita houskeeper which has won many awards and choi jiwoo as lead actress which popular from her role winter sonata.

Good Doctor has finished its broadcast, will Joo Won be awarded with KBS Acting Daesang?

Who will be the glorious winner of acting daesang of each TV station at the end of this year?   It has been pointed out the acting daesang is merely like TV stations running their own private festival but it is still an annual official and biggest event amongst broadcasters in selecting who is the best actor of the year.

Many actors passionately played their dramas which captured viewers attention but I reckon Joo Won, a powerful actor, who played Park Si On in Mon/Tue drama “Good Doctor” will be nominated for KBS daesang award.

In “Good Doctor”, Joo Won played Park Si On who was diagnosed with 3rd level autism and savant syndrome possessing prodigious memory and drawing capability.  His passionate acting such as avoiding eye contacts with people,  hunching back, twitching limbs and restless hand movements are typical autistic symptoms which attracted viewers attention and also moved them to laughters and tears.    On top of it, his impressive and unique way of speech is even mimicked by others.

On the 8th, airing of the last episode finished the story with a heartwarming ending of Kim Do Han (played by Joo Sang Wook) proposing to Yoo Chae Kyung (played by Kim Min Seo) and both Park Si On and Cha Yoon Seo (played by Moon Chae Won) engaging in sweet love.

Previously Joo Won played the grumpy Gu Ma Jun in “Baker King” and then totally transformed into a guy with nice character, Hwang Tae Hee in “Ojakgyo Brothers”.   After that, his character as Lee Kang To in “Bridal Mask” overwhelmed many viewers.

MBC drama “Level 7 Civil Servant” was broadcast earlier this year, he played a rookie agent Han Gil Ro, his sweet romance with Choi Kang Hee captivated heart of viewers.   His hardworking attitude in always showcasing viewers new aspect of his acting is leading to anticipation on what character he is going to play next.

I can see nominees of this year’s KBS award will be Kim Hye Su  (Queen of Workplace), Jang Hyuk (IRIS 2), Kim Nam Gil (Shark) and Joo Won (Good Doctor).  They all worked very hard in different ways to deliver the funny and touching elements of their dramas however I do not think it is regrettable at all if daesang lands in Joo Won’s hands.

Article: [Finale] ‘Good Doctor’ Joo Won, isn’t he worthy of a KBS acting daesang?

    Source: TV Report via Nate

    1. [+864, -143] He needs a daesang right this instant. Not everyone can pull off this kind of acting. If Joo Won is not able to win a daesang, then Shi On maturing was just a dream.

    2. [+714, -84] My grandma joined me when I was watching ‘Good Doctor’ and asked that he was lacking a few brain cells ㅋㅋㅋ She thought he really was mentally challengedㅋㅋ

    3. [+599, -81] He’s an actor who doesn’t just act but also heals

Joo Won’s character required a unique posture in this drama, from his neck to his shoulders and even his waist. All of his body posture looked peculiar, even his style of walking was different from a normal person’s. “Perhaps it is because of (being in those postures for) long periods of time, my muscles constantly feels painful. Actually now my sitting posture and walking style still have Shi On’s shadow,  I haven’t been able to completely get rid of the habit.”.

In the drama ‘Good Doctor’ which concluded recently, Joo Won  played the character Park Shi On who suffers from savant syndrome and has a exceptional talent in diagnosis. NEWS-131016】Joo Won – ‘Moon Chae Won’s First Impression was very cold; Didn’t Think We Would Become This Close’

Actor Joo Won’s and Co-star Moon Chae Won’s distinctive acting compliments one another’s confession.

On the afternoon of 15th October, at a cafe in Seoul, Gangnam, Nonhyeon-dong, Joo Won sat down for an interview, sharing his first impression of his on-screen partner, Moon Chae Won. “Actually, when we first met, I thought that I wouldn’t be able to warm up to Chae Won Noona. When I saw her on videos and television, I felt that Noona was quite soft spoken, I even thought she may have a very cold personality. But it turns out that it is actually not the case. During the meal gathering after the script reading session, I found out that Chae Won noona was very easygoing.”

Joo Won continued,”I’m not sure what was the cause, but we suddenly became very close, during the production press conference we were already very close. Just like how Yoon Seo affects Shi On (Good Doctor’s Characters), hanging out with Chae Won Noona makes me feel relaxed and happy.”

With regards to the comparison on Joo Won’s previous co-star, Choi Kang Hee, Joo Won answered,”It is different being with Kang Hee Noona. Chae Won Noona is very sincere, detailed and careful while Kang Hee Noona is more easygoing by nature. No matter how busy Chae Won Noona is when she is reading her script, she will still scribble some notes. I don’t know what does Noona think, but  I think Noona is quite similar to her character Yoon Seo.”

In the drama ‘Good Doctor’ which concluded recently, Joo Won  played a doctor from the Pediatric Department  that suffers from savant syndrome, Park Shi On, winning the hearts of the audiences with his role. Moon Chae Won reveals the reason why working with Song Joong Ki and Joo Won felt comfortable

    October 20, 2013 @ 12:54 am

    by starsung

When asked about her former co-stars in a recent interview, Moon Chae Won dished, “Their diligence and sincerity can not be compared… It is good that I get to work with such diligent actors.”

“In an actress’ perspective, it is most comfortable when I don’t have to ask, ‘Let’s do this reading’, and ‘Let’s try this scene together’, when acting. I am really thankful that they made me feel comfortable.”

“Song Joong Ki is one year older than me and Joo Won is one year younger… To be honest, if we’re one year apart, I think it’s okay to be considered as same-age colleagues. We’re around the same age so it was comfortable to work with each other.”

When asked how her male co-stars described their first impression of her as “cold”, Moon Chae Won shared, “I don’t know why that is the case. When I was a rookie, I was nervous and didn’t know how to approach others, but I try to approach people a lot more now.”

Moon Chae Won was fortunate enough to work with Song Joong Ki and Joo Won in ‘Nice Guy’ and ‘Good Doctor’ which both ended up becoming hit dramas.

    «More more Joowon’s Interview»

[NEWS-TRANSLATION] 131017 Joowon, “I grew (mature) together with Park Shion”

    Posted by saraholix

“When i held fan signing, everyone there shouted imitating Shion’s ‘Andwemnida’. (You can’t do that).  Haha”

KBS2TV drama “Good Doctor” (Writers Park Jae Bum, Director Ki Min Soo, Production : Logos film) lead by actor Joowon (26) speaks up his mind about his drama.

Good Doctor success to move viewers heart and feel warmth from first episode on August till the end of drama. This piece of work is different from other medical drama because of  Park Shion (Joowon)’s character who has savant syndrome and to overcome his obstacle to became Pediatric surgeon. How he grow up  and mature , and change himself to be better because of his surrounding.

Good Doctor got it highest ratings 21.5% and always get the first place on the time slot throughout the last episode. Actor Joowon is one of the best screenplay actor behind the success of Good Doctor. Joowon once again proved his status as Top Actor at his twenties. After this drama ends, Joowon already had next project for Musical “Ghost” and will start practice immediately.

“Good Doctor ‘Good Filming Site, Good Production Crew and Good Actor/Actress’”

Good Doctor that received loves from many people already ended. Joowon feels sad that this drama already ended because he really likes his team at this drama and the atmosphere at filming site too. From debut until now Joowon always success to play his roles. He expressed his sad feelings because this drama already ended. He still fell the after effect of drama. Because of his role needs him to slightly bent, he still feel pain in his shoulder, back and neck, “i don’t know about my confidence too and my hands become un-heaped”.

“When i finished playing this role i feel refreshed but also sad. Among of all i feel really sad because i have to be apart with our hardworking actor/actress, staff, and production crew. I feel sad because i’ve finished to express my role as Park Shion. Honestly, i really like all of the people at filming site. If it’s like this, even we worked together for a long time or for several years, i would like to”.

“We always worked together at the hospital with all of Production crew and all of actor/actress for this 3 months and we always spent our time together.  We always gather together to do many things and we don’t feel any awkwardness. We’re around the same age, so we always played together such as played ball together and we make much noise because of our laughter”. Joowon and Joo Sang Wook are the ‘mood maker’ at the filming site.

“If we get together we will distracted other people because we became undisciplined and noisy. Because we’re around the same age we can’t stop to talk and we always have fun and pull prank together too. Joo Sang Wook hyung is a mood maker because he has cheerful personality. Even he slightly older than us who are around the same age, me mixed with us very well so we become closer like a friend.

Joowon played as a pediatric surgeon at Seongwon Hospital University and meet many children at his ward like “Wolf Girl” Eun Ok. He meet all child actors too and he praised them with their acting.

“Because of child actor our atmosphere become lively, i like children. they are really cute. Eventhough they are still young, but their acting is very good. I hope in the future they will be best actor/actress like our senior here. I hope they will stick with good acting in the future. Time will passed by, like me who already debut for 3 years, and i’m surprised that one of child actor actually my senior because he/she already debut for 4 years (laugh)”

“Stiff Moon Chae Won? She is really easy going actress”

Joowon already known about “Joo-Joo couple” . Fans gave a nickname to Joowon – Joo Sang Wook as Joo-Joo couple. When he asked about which one that will you choose between Joo-Joo couple and Shion-Yunseo couple? Joowon choose it immediately.

“Between the two couple, i like Shion-Yunseo couple more than Joo-Joo couple. Joo-Joo couple are always meet at the first half, but with Shion-Yunseo we have many moments to spent our time together. We are also expected and always thinking how to develop our relationship between Shion-Yunseo. Writers also have many worries because Park Shion character isn’t like a man that we always see everywhere”.

Growth process of Park Shion as a doctor will get along with Park Shion – Cha Yunseo love line growth process too. This two person feeling appearance are like Peter Pan story. It’s like a boy meet a woman and want to be a real man because he loves her and it’s give a fresh charm to the story itself. Moon Chae Won performance in here is also mesmerizing.

“I’ve heard about “Great chemistry couple” nickname. I don’t have ‘stand out’ and get into scene immediately style for my acting. Moon Chae Won also heard the same thing many times too (about her acting style). That’s why two of us always discuss and talk our acting too. When i meet her for the first time, i think she’s a difficult person, but in fact she’s easy going person and natural (pure)”.

“Good Doctor” is first medical drama for Joowon so there isn’t any moment that he can’t forget from this drama (he remember all the moments from this drama). He met 2 person who is an autistic for his research to created and portrayed his character as Park Shion. People will think Chowon and Kibong as reference about autistic character. He can’t found the right character that can be role model to protrayed Park Shion, so he success to portrayed the character Park Shion in his unique way. He learn more too about pediatric development in reality.

“For me, Shion – Yunseo couple is real, so my heart is hurt when people look at them coldly. As actor Joowon, i feel pitiful for Shion. That’s why i tell what i feel and worries about them to Joo Sang Wook. I’m happy that after our drama ended, the hospital that we used for filming added more facilities”.

“Actor Joowon, now come back to Musical, his original hometown”

What was it like to be a Musical star and now become drama star? He had appeared at 2010 KBS drama [Baker King Kim Tak Gu], [Ojakgyo Brothers], MBC [7 Level Civil Servant], [Bridal Mask] and now [Good Doctor]. The most important thing for him to choose a good drama is from the script.

“The most important for me to choose a drama is a script that look interesting. After that i look at director and the other casts. All production will have a good production if there’s an interesting script, awesome director, and good actor/actress that work together. The team will be destroyed if everyone want to do the things by themselves in their own way.

During ‘Good Doctor’ Ki Min Soo PD has a good leadership because he is very opened with other opinions so he will consider and coordinates everyone’s opinions.

We asked Joowon what will he present to us as his next role. After a long time absence from musical stage, he choose to come back to his first home and will be appear at Musical “Ghost” that will be starting from November.

“There isn’t a right answer for acting. As well as Musical “Ghost”, it’s also the same. I want to show everyone the different side of me. I hope that viewers will see me not as an actor Joowon but as the character that i created when they see my performance, like Shion character that i created and played.“

[NEWS-TRANSLATION] 131017 Joowon,’Our country still ashamed and cover up the fact about autism’

    Posted by mei880525

Joowon “Our country still ashamed&cover up(hide) the fact about autism”

Actor Joowon (26, real name Moon Jun Won) is an actor who has a lot of greedy. He started his debut in Drama “Baker King, Kim Tak Gu” on 2010, after that he appeared on drama Ojakgyo Brothers(2011), Bridal Mask (2012), 7 Level Civil Servant (2013), and recently ended television drama “Good Doctor”, for this 3 years he worked continously and had been starred in 5 drama as an master of baker, a detective(police), an anti japan fighter, a secret agent, a doctor and He has been showed his great and perfect acting performance with each character and different personality in every character that he’ve been played.

Joowon always get 1st place for ratings in his drama time slot and get a title “Man of Ratings” and “Actor that we can believed”. Not only drama but He also had been appeared in movies Special Investigation Unit (2011), Don’t click (2012) and upcoming next movie that will be premiere at December 2013 “Catch Me”, it’s proved his acting energy still alive.

He had been showed his great acting performance in ‘Good Doctor’ as a savant syndrome (one of a kind of autism), Park Shion, who already known that he have an autism and lacked of social skills but try to overcome his disabilities and reach his dream as Pediatric surgeon and Joowon success showing us his solid acting.

‘There isn’t any break for Joowon for this 3 years’ he said, ‘even i don’t have any energy but when i come to filming site suddenly my energy will be recharged. After 3 years i will come back to Musical in Musical ‘Ghost’. even i want to rest a bit but i’ve been late to practice for 2 weeks behind than other actor/actress, so it doesn’t make sense if i get a rest.” This is what he expressed about how he feels.

-It’s hard to act as Park Shion because of the character that can’t expressed his feeling and emotions properly

‘Pediatric Surgeon, young man who had developmental disorder, savant syndrome that unfamiliar make him do a research for his role.

Joowon, “How to portray and act as someone who has developmental disorder but could changed because people taking care of him, that’s what i think. Two months before drama filming started, i visited autism center and met with autism patient, and when i met them it seems that they have no difference with us, they just like a normal person. That’s the basis to formed my character and create a new things for my character. When we done first script reading, in the other actor/actress and all my seniors  mind, an autism acting was like Joo Seung Woo sunbaenim at “Marathon” or Shin Hyun Joon sunbaenim at “Barefoot Kiboong” so when i read my script with different tone they were surprised”.

    -Experience of acting

I don’t know anything about autism and autistic person so i learned about them. I was surprised when i met them for the first time because they can talk very clearly and fluently “Are you Joowon shi?”. i blame myself because i don’t know anything about them before. That’s why i put my full effort and working hard to portray Shion properly. Fortunately, in between our drama filming, Director of autism center called me and said “Thank you for expressed it (role as an autistic) very well”.

Joowon, “I’m surprised and shocked of the fact that there are only 9 hospitals in Korea that had pediatric surgeon. I’ve think many times that it would be better if Korea had more pediatric surgeon in the future. There weren’t any autism center in Korea that already have proper facilities and the best medical treatment for autism because our country still ashamed and hide the fact about autism. Autistic also have an opportunities to get proper facilities and medical treatment too, so it would be better if government more aware of autism issue and they could have proper treatment”.

-How to express growth up process for a people who lacked on social skill

“I did my best to establish my character and to express lacked social abilities at the first half, and growing up his social abilities in second half later. Shion’s social abilities and his confidence reappears because his ‘Family’ in hospital help him to get his confidence back and beautifully treat him normal and acknowledge his abilities. Growing up Shion’s social abilities make me always think in each process “So, now my …. aspect on social abilities has been growing up”.

-Scene that make my heart hurt

“There is a child actor who suddenly got sick when we’re filming. He/she can’t greet us, we don’t know his/her age. He/she can’t answer when we ask him/her either. He/she sweep his own sweat but when we check his/her heart pulse and then we put our hand in his/her neck, he/she actually got a high fever. I’ve been thinking at that moment, “This children condition can’t continue like this”. After that, director had a briefing and explained this situation and then this child sent to the hospital immediately. I don’t know but maybe that child only thinking his professionalism. That’s why every actor in medical drama always said “We had to do the surgery professionally” and now i understand what this words means”.

    – 1 Night 2 days last filming had been done.Feelings about stepping down from the program that he has done for 1 year 8 months.

I’m sorry to our staff and our members. My hyungs always said something funny and try to be funny but i’m just hear them like a viewers. I feel sorry because i couln’t do the best for my part. Because of my musical schedules, i’ve decided to step down from that program and i’ve been thinking “maybe 1 night 2 days would be better without me”.

    – Started to practicing for the musical the day after the drama was ended. I can’t take a rest even for a little moment.

“Even i want to take a rest, i have to settle my mind. Because of ‘Good Doctor’ I was starting practice two weeks later than other actor/actress, so i had no choice.  I have to focus on practicing. I usually can’t eat when i’m under stress or when i’m feeling nervous and i couldn’t eat even a meal on the first day of practicing. Even though we had lunch break but i couldn’t leave practice room because i had so much to do”.

    – I don’t feel tired to work continuously.

“I have a good stamina. I feel relaxed when i got to my working place 30 minutes before starting time. I’m already have this habit since my musical period. My heart feel more relaxed and feel fully ready for working (filming) and the result will be better with come earlier then come late and hurrying to work. I don’t know if the actor/actress and staff will like my habit or not”.

-What will you do if you get some time off (have a break)?

“I want to take a trip somewhere but i don’t want take some time off for several months because i will get nervous if i don’t have any works. My style is i will get my energy when i’m work and i like the feelings when i’m physically and emotionally tired from working”.

Actor Joo Sangwook gave admirable appraisal to Moon Chaewon, who starred with him in “Good Doctor”.

    by mulberry9

“Good Doctor” Joo Sangwook: “The acting ability of Moon Chaewon when making her character is incredible” Admirable Appraisal

On the afternoon of the 21st, at a restaurant in Cheongdamdong, Joo Sangwook praised Moon Chaewon’s acting ability.

In the recently ended KBS2 Mon-Tues drama “Good Doctor” (Writer Park Jaebum, Director Ki Minsoo), Joo Sangwook, who portrayed a pediatric associate professor Kim Do-han, and Moon Chaewon, who portrayed a 2nd year fellow Cha Yoonseo, received favorable reviews for their impassioned acting.

Joo Sangwook stated, “The degree to which I saw Chaewon’s ability amazed me when I looked at the script. In the script, the character Yoonseo is not clear-cut. I wondered ‘What is her charm?’. Truthfully, Shi-on’s character is really clear-cut so you only have to act well. Of course, acting well isn’t easy and Joowon acted really well, right?”

Joo Sangwook continued with admirable appraisal, “Also, portraying Kim Do-han is simple because you see his hot temperament and operation scenes, but when I saw Yoonseo’s part in the script, I wondered, ‘What is this?’. But Chaewon had experience in portraying main characters and she’s really good at acting so I saw that she had the ability to shape the character with her rendition and carry through with it. I saw that she even made the audience sympathize with the character as she portrayed the character with her interpretation. After I watched all this happen, I came to acknowledge her as an actress”.

Moon Chae Won revealed her impression of Joo Won before meeting him “I didn’t see much of Joo Won’s projects but even I watched 10 episodes or 10 minutes, his expression of that instant moment did pass me a message.  I can’t recall which scenes they were but I think Joo Won is a good actor”.

She continued “I met him first time through this project.  Joo Won is sincere,  serious and makes effort on his acting.  It has nothing to do with age because not all actors make their efforts like him.  It was most enjoyable playing the drama with him.  I received lots of help.  It was a challenge playing the character of Park Si On.   He was bold in making this selection and grasped so well the centre of the character.  Joo Won is a good actor.”

Medical Drama? Script? Acting? Good Doctor coolly overcomes all stereotypes!

The popular drama Good Doctor has aired its final episode on 8 October 2013. 1st Year Resident Park Shi On, who was an autistic savant, managed to overcome the prejudice of people telling him that certain things are out of his limits. The drama ended with Park Shi On entering the peak of not only his professional life but also his love life.

It is little known that when KBS was first writing the script for Good Doctor, it was in the same precarious situation as Park Shi On. There was no broadcasting station was willing to take on a mini series written by a relatively unknown and non established writer, actors who has the skill but no star power as lead actors and characters that constantly create trouble, Many were doubtful that this drama could ever succeed.

This worry was like a joke. From the start of its broadcast on 5th August 2013 to the final episode, Good Doctor was always first in viewership ratings. Although there was not even one scene of a passionate kiss between the main couple, the viewership ratings nonetheless continued to increase steadily. Just as Park Shi On managed to overcome the prejudice he faced, Good Doctor overcame all the difficulties it faced and proved that itself to be an experience worth remembering.

We take a look at several themes in the drama below

She said, “Before the surgery scene, I went to Gangnam St. Mary’s Hospital to observe an operation where the surgeon removed a tumor from a newborn’s throat.”

She continued, “The professor said it was a rare opportunity and that I watched him for 1.5 hours. He told me I was better than what he expected,” as she reminisced on her experience.

She went home feeling better than what she expected but had a difficult time because images from the surgery kept replaying in her head, and she had no appetite for four days.

Moreover, she explained the reason why she left the surgery room after 1.5 hours saying, “I pulled down the mask because it was getting stuffy, and suddenly I felt dizzy” and added, “I think doctors are incredible. Having to stand for hours is physical labor in itself.”

After hearing about her surgery observation withdrawal, netizens concluded Moon Chae Won gave a realistic performance on the drama because she had the experience and gave credit to her efforts to play her roles.

Another Moon Chae-won’s Interview by hancinema

Moon Chae-won has become a familiar face among many Korean households after playing the role of a pediatrician in the recently ended KBS drama “Good Doctor”. In the show, she helps train an autistic resident at the hospital and eventually falls in love with him.

Moon has been lucky to star in a number of popular soaps and films, including “The Princess’ Man” (2011). Her latest drama also garnered the highest viewer ratings of its time slot, with an average of 17.9 percent. Rather than pointing to her uncanny ability to pick out winning scripts, she said the secret of her success is that she has been blessed to work with good people.

In “Good Doctor”, Moon made an extra effort at verisimilitude by paying attention to even the smallest of details regarding her appearance. She opted for minimal makeup and short fingernails, and even ignored her mother’s advice to accentuate her cheekbones using makeup because she thought a real doctor would be too busy to bother with that.

The drama explored the theme of what it takes to make a good doctor. “In the drama, I said ‘A good person is probably a good doctor’. The same might be true for actors. I’ll likely continue to keep asking myself, ‘what makes a good actor?'” she said.

“I’m not the type of person who can completely forget myself and identify with every character I play. Even if I take on a totally new role, past characters are still there inside me”, she said.

Six years after making her acting debut, she said she wants to slow down her workload and focus on quality rather than quantity in terms of artistic output from now on.

    «Moon Chae-Won’s Interview»

“[Yoon Seo] is more proactive than me, I have a more boring personality than Yoon Seo.”
Actress Moon Chae Won smiled after having taken off her doctor’s coat, one which she has donned on since August. Using a voice that can move many men’s hearts, and a quiet demeanor, [she] recalls the last day of filming for KBS2 drama series “Good Doctor” on October 8th.
“If I were to go back to school, could I become a doctor? The possibility is probably less than 2%, but I often think about having cool professions.”
Moon Chae Won through portraying a 2nd year pediatric surgeon, YS, lived the role for 4 months along with Joo Won, who played autistic Park Shi On as his role went through the process of becoming a pediatric surgeon in Good Doctor.
“Compared to a medical drama that focuses predominantly on male protagonists, I wanted to film in a drama that felt more balanced. Though the subject matter is very interesting, it was better that [I] had the opportunity to perform surgeries.”
Moon Chae Won once had the thought to portray unique roles in romantic stories. In the past, most heroines in medical dramas had romantic storylines with older characters, but this time the difference laid in a having a relationship with an autistic, younger man, Park Shi On. Moon Chae Won likes Yoon Seo’s character, but also faced many difficulties with this role.
When Good Doctor started broadcasting in August, the drama has succeeded in garnering number one in ratings for its time spot, a great start for the drama. After one month of broadcasting, the show surpassed the 20% mark, ignited by the burgeoning romance between Park Shi On and Cha Yoon Seo. Moon Chae Won credits the audience for the successful ratings.
“I have the feeling that Good Doctor was created with the audiences. It was the audiences’ open hearts that allowed the birth of such a unique story of love. The audience deserves more credit. It was not just what we gave, but more of how much [audiences] were willing to receive in their hearts. [I guess] you can call it ‘being healed’?”
Traditionally, medical dramas were centered with saving patients in hospitals, and the doctors within those settings were enraptured in department politics and rivalries, which is rather unfortunate. Compared to that, Good Doctor is better.
“Park Shi On told the audience: ‘a good person is a good doctor, and those who are troubled by the decisions they have to make are all good doctors.’ This is a great point. This drama showcased through the female role’s perspectives of what constitutes as the ego/pride of a doctor in the medical industry.”
Having played the role of a “good doctor”, [Moon Chae Won] has gotten a deeper understanding of what it means to be a “good actor”.
“After getting this role, it wasn’t just my thoughts and perceptions about doctors that have changed. While filming, I kept on pondering about what it means to be a good actor. ‘I wasn’t just an average actor who kept being troubled by what a good actor was like, was I?’ Those kinds of thoughts would make me melancholy.”
“In the last several years, it hasn’t just been about loving my job, but added greed or desire to successfully complete a role. And it isn’t just me who is troubled by this, I think many actors are all worried about ‘good actor’ and are making efforts to be one. Through Good Doctor, I was able to learn to just continue to happily walk down this road.”
Read rest article in here http://moonchaewon.net/index.php/articles/interviews/2013/item/570-moon-chae-won-very-eloquent-has-deep-thoughts-want-to-be-every-man-s-yoon-seo

    The character that Moon Chae Won portrayed in the year end medical KBS drama Good Doctor is nowhere to be seen in other dramas. Yoon Seo’s charismatic and forth-coming aura have captivated viewers’ attention;
“Being a high-achiever, character Cha Yoon Seo is a person who will flaunt after getting proposed to, as she is an extrovert, intelligent and highly self-esteemed second year fellow in the pediatrics’ department. Her warmth around people led her into being labeled as an angelic doctor in the Seongwon University Hospital. With Yoon Seo’s garb and  her hair tied, Moon Chae Won initially caused her department problems before generating a certain degree of healing effect.
Moon Chae Won’s character Yoon Seo took care of Park Si On who has been diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder where she acted like a mother , friend and lover , and finally as a partner.
“After reading the script, I felt the warmth that the script encompasses. When compared to strong political scenes and masculine characters , I prefer scripts like “General Hospital”. Scripts that focus on paediatrics is certainly refreshing and the autistic themed sections made it even more attractive, since I could not anticipate how the storyline will progress. The love story in the drama is nonetheless special , that’s why I eventually chose Good Doctor as my new project.

Moon Chae Won’s intentions are as such. The confession scene in episode 20 made her understand Si On’s love towards her even more . In order to help autistic-stricken Park Si On to set foot in the society, she helped him tremendously.
“While portraying other roles with love-injected storylines , the characters will also be involved in seeking vengeance. It is really different this time- this love storyline starts from the basics , ie giving , tolerance and acceptance. From a senior’s point of view, from being loved to loving someone was being shown in episode 20 , How will a relationship progress when a person loves the other? With this thought in mind, I thought that the emotions and pure love shown are purely from the script as I have no prior experiences before this.”
Is this the only reason? Viewers were adamant about the pairing, it’s the so called; “that have to be together by the end of the show” . Although this is a medical drama, but the storyline is fairytale-like. This pairing has eventually coincides with viewers’ expectations of them and they have had a happy ending. “With the relationship progressing well in a medical drama, I’m of course elated. (haha)”
“Therefore, I have attempted quite a few ways to portray my character with different approach, though not really different , but Joo Won and director kept insisted that I follow my own way of portraying it. Later on, those ideas that I couldn’t imagine came out instinctively. It was rather difficult to film although interesting , but with the most of the viewers taking it in positively, it made those scenes memorable.”
Moon Chae Won also mentioned that she found the true meaning of happiness with the character Yoon Seo, and with this character, she has brought about a healing effect for the viewers as well. She has invaluable experiences from this production, she stated.
“Actors normally have dilemmas with the ways they have in mind in attacking their lines. I’m more practical in this, as time passes by my innocence has drooped down a little too. This production has a healing effect that made me recall my innocence . After portraying a character filled with sadness in my previous productions, I will often feel like I’m being masked, Good Doctor has brought about an effect opposite to this. The career as an actress is not an easy one; acting is associated with freedom but it is too time consuming.”

【NEWS-131020】 Moon Chae Won “Joo Won is an honest and serious good actor”

Actress Moon Chae Won complimented Joo Won as an “honest and serious good doctor”. Both of them had recently starred as a sweet couple who overcame obstacles in KBS’s Monday-Tuesday drama “Good Doctor”, which gained much popularity among its audiences.

With regards to the impression she had of Joo Won before meeting him in person, Moon Chae Won shared, “I did not manage to watch all of Joo Won’s previous works. However, I did manage to catch 10 episodes or 10 minutes (of his previous works) and I could feel the things he wants to express just from an instant expression. I can’t really recall which scene it was but I though that Joo Won was certainly a good actor”.

She continued, “It was through this project that I first met him. Joo Won really immersed his honesty and seriousness into his acting. Not having anything to do with age, not all actors are able to accomplish that. Acting with him was very comfortable and I also received a lot of help.” She continued, “Park Shi On is a challenging character. Through decisive selection, he managed to adequately capture the essence of the character. Joo Won is a good actor.”.

Moon Chae Won expresses “Love scenes with Joo Won (character) was difficult”

From SBS’s Painter of the Wind, Brilliant Legacy, KBS’s Castle Lady, The Innocent Man until the recently concluded Good Doctor, the choices made by Moon Chae Won proved to be wise and smart. Despite its initial review as a weak Monday/Tuesday drama, Good Doctor has won the number one rating victory from the first to the 20th episode, gaining the positive review of “healing drama”

Moon Chae Won starred as Cha Yoon Seo a second year fellow at the pediatric department. For Park Shi On who suffers from the savant syndrome, Yoon Seo exists as a elder sister, senior and lover. Moon Chae Won has portrayed a character that does not hold any biasness towards people and things, highly critical of oneself, a better drinker than her male counterparts and scolds people with any hesitance.

It has only been less than 2 years ago that Moon Chae Won had acting criticisms when The Princess’ Man was broadcasted. Her growth has been a curvy line. Moon Chae Won’s unparalleled performance, an actress in her 20’s that has risen to the stage. A host of writers and directors are looking forward to making dramas with her as the main female lead. We are curious as to what had happened in this 2 year period.

Recently, I meet with Moon Chae Won at a café in Gangnam, Seoul. Maybe it’s due to the filming; a sense of tiredness can still be seen on her face. During the interview, her attitude of trying her best to answer all questions made me feel that she is a very honest actress. When the reporter asked “Is the interview tiring?” she replied with a bright smile, “I have got adequate rest.” “Because the response of the drama was good, I am spending each day with a grateful heart.”

For medical dramas with storylines that “does not permit a second take”, the medical terms were difficult and there is a need to infuse the various styles. Good Doctor is different from existing medical drama as it is the first drama that uses the pediatrics department has the background and having a character that suffers from autism leading the core. With regards to that, Moon Chae Won expressed that “In comparison to external surgery department drama, the amount of medical terms is not as much. The thing that tortured the actor and actresses most was the heat.”

Other than the heat, another (difficult) issue will be the love line/scenes with Joo Won’s character. It is the first time that Cha Yoon Seo (Moon’s character) developed feelings with a character that suffers from autism. When asked about her thoughts/sense of recognition in regards to the love between Shi On and Yoon Seo in Good Doctor, she said “the writer did not fully develop the story” but also expressed the underlying reason, saying that “it might be because the gradual development with Shi On from a friend to lover is difficult to construct.”

“Even though there is difficulty, I still enjoyed acting out the relationship. I am really grateful that the audiences could develop a sense of recognition (about the relationship). Good Doctor is a work and drama that feels different. Even though my previous works also gained a sense of recognition from the audiences, but as Good Doctor gradually open up the hearts of audiences, the writers words and our way of acting also started to change. Because we could feel the audiences opening up to us, it seems that our impromptu acting also became possible (laughs).”

Moon Chae Won on Public Relationship? “ It seems difficult…”

After the consecutive successes of her dramas, Moon Chae Won who starred from KBS drama of last year, There’s no such thing as Nice Guy where she portrayed and loved as Seo Eun Gi did again the same hit with her recent KBS drama entitled “Good Doctor” there she played as Doctor Cha Yoon Seo that has led a program ratings on its top spot. Moon Chae Won with actor Joo Won draws us to the set of a University Hospital’s pediatric surgery department as to which the story revolved on. After the drama ends, Moon Chae Won has shared her stories on “Good Doctor”.

Good Doctor, “My heart is cleansed”

Good Doctor is loved because it’s a “kind drama” without an irritating nature to it. Park Shi On who is played by Joo Won portrayed a doctor diagnosed with level 3 autism and a savant syndrome; He’s a person with pure soul. The romance between Cha Yeon Seo and Park Shi On make viewers’ heart heightened in excitement.

Moon Chae Won said, “While acting in Good Doctor, I feel like being renewed. The drama reminded me of my long-forgotten outlook of being unprejudiced. The people in the drama treats Shi On based from that perspective. If People look at it that way then that’s where the healing comes in.

“My task is to figure out how to play not interested female character to be interested/loved by the viewers, she said”.

“I think in a drama, it is just necessary for female characters to be lovable, but this time, I played a woman who is virile, carefree and who doesn’t even know how to dress up. So my homework this time is to draw out that charm and make a lovable person out of my character.”

Moon Chae Won laughs as she said, “My younger brother in the army tells me that many of the people there were drawn to Good Doctor, but I knew he prefers drama with an exciting plot more.

[Actress Moon Chae Won “Instead of having a good eye (for characters and works), I am an actress with good fortune (affinity with audience and co workers)]

KBS Drama “Good Doctor” Passionate acting of the female lead

Where does this courage and braveness stem from? Even though she has continuously showed off her candid charms in the drama, but it’s still her feminine image that first captures my attention after meeting her face to face.

However, once she starts expressing her clearly thought out personal views, the image of the smart and clever Yoon Seo character immediately comes to mind.

I met up with actress Moon Chae Won on the 18th at a café in Gangnam, Seoul, who has recently exhibited her passionate acting through the character Cha Yoon Seo in the concluded drama Good Doctor at KBSTV2.

With the pediatrics department of a university hospital as background, Good Doctor showcases the activeness of main characters such as Park Shi On, cha Yoon Seo, Kim Do Han, etc who are professional doctors and Moon Chae Won’s character as the brave and loving doctor Yoon Seo has gained rave reviews.

“I hope to give Yoon Seo a sense of real human touch, aren’t her un-restrained and forthright characters Yoon Seo’s biggest charm. However, after looking at Yoon Seo for an extended period of time, the character that one will like to kiss most is Yoon Seo. In contrast to “cuteness that is on the surface”, she possesses “cuteness from within”. Even though these are phrases we use at home, rather than describing her as being playfully cute, she give the feeling of being straightforwardly cute in certain aspects (laughs)”.

This drama was concluded on the 8th of last month at a high rating of 19.8, the meticulous capturing of the warmth, love and growth between people and the steady development of the storyline has captured the hearts of audiences.

“ It was a good portrayal of doctor as a profession from human nature perspective. Isn't the drama’s title “Good Doctor”, and the last lines that appeared “a doctor that worries about what makes a good doctor is a good doctor”, the aim of the drama has not shifted in the slightness from the beginning to the end.”

【INTERVIEW-131105】Joo Won ‘The worries of acting in Good Doctor’

“I was worried about biases arising from young people with autism, the worries of acting in Good Doctor”

For Joo Won, Good Doctor was a very meaningful piece of work.

Joo Won is an artist who has been gaining popularity rapidly in recent years. Every drama that he starred in received high viewership ratings. From KBS2 TV series “King of Baker, Kim Tak Goo” to “Ojakgyo Brothers”, “Bridal Mask”, MBC’s drama “7th Grade Civil Servant”  till the recent KBS2 TV “Good Doctor”, all of these drama had received tremendous positive responses. Recently, he is even preparing to the musical stage after 4 years, starring as the male lead in the musical “Ghost”. 24 hours per day doesn’t seem to be enough for the actor with such a busy schedule.

Among these works, the drama that has heightened Joo Won’s acting and popularity is “Good Doctor”.  Joo Won was casted as Park Shi On, a handicapped doctor who is naive and passionate. This character exceeded the expectations of audiences by a large margin, not just because he is a popular young star, but more so because of the acting skills that an actor should possess and which Joo Won has received rave reviews in that aspect. However, for Joo Won, “Good Doctor” was not a very simple piece of work.

In the recent Newsen interview, Joo Won talked about his psychological burden and effort while filming “Good Doctor” and the effort he has invested for this character.

When posed with the question “Did you expect that “Good Doctor” would become so successful?’ Joo Won replied “Frankly speaking, I did not expect that the drama would become so successful. However, I did felt that “Good Doctor” has a story line which audiences will probably like. But, the character Park Shi On in “Good Doctor” has also influence people to have a different view when looking at young people with autism due to my portrayal of Park Shi On.”

In reality, the character of Park Shi On that Joo Won has portrayed is very different from the usual young people with autism that has appeared in other previous works. As a doctor that saves people, taking on a role that was above him in the society was very meaningful. It also changed how everyone view people with autism.

His perfect portrayal of the character Park Shi On has exhibited Joo Won’s acting skills. He has wowed audiences with his meticulous and matured grapple of the character.

As Joo Won recalls “The most difficult aspect of portraying the character Park Shi On is that I have no previous examples to serve as a reference. That was the most difficult. Before official filming started, I searched for a lot of works that has characters of a young person with autism, but there wasn’t one that fits or any aspect that they had in common. The only aspect that could act as a reference was the expression in their eyes and their hand gestures that are filled with anxiety. As for the rest, I had to figure it out slowly and act it out slowly.

For Joo Won who has such a tight schedule and was not in his best physical condition, his eyes sparkled when the interview topic relating to acting was brought up. From this, we can see the immense passion and ambition towards acting that Joo Won possesses. Even with the psychological burden, he still tried his best to portray Park Shi On in “Good Doctor”. Such passion is indeed connected continuously. I guess this is the reason that makes everyone like Joo Won, not because he is a star but because he is an actor.

Joo Won who has immense passion for acting doesn’t only appear in Movies and TV screens, but his passion has also made him step onto the musical stage once again.  After 4 years, as though he is returning back to his hometown, Joo Won once again stands onto the theatre stage for the musical “Ghost”. In “Ghost”, he stars as Sam Wheat, a character that could not bear to leave his loved one even after his death.

“Ghost” the musical is adapted from the same titled movie “Ghost” that has received tremendous success worldwide in 1990, starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. After its first success in England in 2011, it has since being staged at the Broadway, Australia, Holland, etc. The Korean version this time round is its first in Asia. “Ghost” the musical will start on the 24th of November at D-Cube Arts Centre.

    Lady Says:

Guys, lets vote Good Doctor as the best korean drama 2013, fighting!

  42. 542
    jury Says:

    ‘Good Doctor’: Superb entertainment

People with mental disabilities tend to be invisible on television. I can count on one hand the number of TV programs I’ve seen that involve a character with any kind of cognitive disorder. That very short list now includes the award-winning KBS smash hit ‘Good Doctor.’

Actor Joo Won takes on the lead role of Park Shi-on, the autistic son of an abusive alcoholic from a poor coal town. What makes Shi-on special: He has savant syndrome, enabling him to memorize, recall, and comprehend everything he’s ever read, along with the ability to visualize patient-specific anatomy from every angle, like a human full-color 4-D scanner. Finding a supporter in local doctor Choi Woo-seok(later the director of Sungwon University Hospital), Shi-on’s talents are nurtured to the point where he’s starting his first year residency in pediatric surgery.

From a Western perspective, it seems like a great fit; a medical genius with the personality of a caring child caring for kids. American sensibilities would say that so long as he has proper support to fill in social gaps with the parents, any hospital would be lucky to have him. Problem: This story isn’t set in America, but in Korea, where there is still a dauntingly large amount of prejudice and ignorance towards the disabled. On the plus side, it makes for great conflict, and consequently, great TV.

What strikes me most about this series is how inherently good Shi-On is as a person. He meets with more unfair situations than any one person should have to endure, yet manages to weather them with a patience and understanding that puts the ‘normal’ people to shame. It’s this very quality that sparks a love interest between Shi-on and 3rd-year resident Cha Yoon-seo, played by curvy starlet Moon Chae-won. While it seems far-fetched, I completely understand the attraction. Not only is he brilliant and funny, but his personality lacks any kind of duplicity, selfishness, or ulterior motives. That’s a very rare and special blend of security any woman would be lucky to have in this day and age. Conversely, Yoon-seo instinctively provides him with the understanding and respect he truly deserves.

The story is made complete by an ensemble cast filled with colorful characters, such as Jo Jeong-mi, the warm-hearted but homely male pediatric nurse, who’s Shi-on’s first true friend, and Nam Joo-yeon, chief pediatric nurse and Nurse Jo’s not-so-secret crush. Added to this mix are Shi-on’s parents, fellow residents, and the children they care for.

All this combines in a drama that’s not only medically smart(easily the equal of Grey’s Anatomy), but also combines the heart-warming wholesomeness of family classics such as ‘The Waltons’ and ‘Promised Land.’ I’m in my 40’s, fairly jaded, and watch TV for a living, yet ‘Good Doctor’ repeatedly had me crying for sheer joy at the beauty of the human spirit. That’s storytelling at its finest. This is one series worth a 20-hour marathon, grabbing a few hours sleep, then watching it all over again.

    jury Says:

    Good Doctor Synopsis

The show will also throw some important questions along the way as the story unfolds such as “What should grown ups do for the betterment of our children.”

The children in the pediatric ward are our children, nephews and more.

“Good Doctor” seeks to help make the world a brighter place for the children.

    Not disabled but alternately-abled

Some viewers might find it strange to find a less-able or alternately-abled individual starring in a drama instead of a documentary.

Some might feel uncomfortable with the fact that the star of the show is not a lovely lady or a charming young man.

But there are more ways than one dramas can touch lives and entertain viewers.

In reality, these type of individuals are marginalized or looked to as subjects of pity.

But that’s not necessarily the case.

They too have something to offer to this world.

Too many people have the wrong conception of autism.

With characters featured in films like “Marathon” being one of the more recognized individuals with such conditions, people still view them as social outcasts and victims.

Unknown to many, there are many different types and levels of these conditions.

And some are capable of overcoming them and blend in as a contributing member of our society.

Unfortunately the biggest obstacles standing in their way is the misconception of people, those who provide a glass ceiling that stunt their growth.

“Good Doctor” shines light on these issues and portray these individuals as normal people with great aspirations and dreams.

The show aims to remind viewers that what they need is acceptance, not sympathy. (KBS GLOBAL)
