Fashion 70’s focused on the lives of four young people, from their childhood during the Korean War, to their careers and love lives within the booming fashion world of the seventies. At the same time, Joon Hee also makes friends with two boys, Dong Young, the son of a military general and Jang Bin. But when North Korean forces invade their town, both girls are separated from their parents and Joon Hee’s mother is killed in an explosion. Believing his daughter to have died, Joon Hee’s father adopts Kang Hee and raises her as his own daughter. Joon Hee is discovered at an orphanage by Kang Hee’s mother, and is also adopted. The trauma of the events causes Joon Hee to block out her childhood memories and she grows up on a small island as Doe Mi, unaware of her true identity.

Oh, this series!! I loved it to death all the way until the last couple episodes. I was completely hooked by the first half during the war when the four leads were all kids. It was touching and intense and suspenseful. I worried about the girls when they got separated from their parents. I felt so sorry for Peen, whose mother obviously didn’t love him. The first half was definitely my favorite, and I was so touched that the girls were rescued from the orphanage by each others’ parents.
I have to say, on a line all by itself, that I LOVED Peen’s theme music.
The re-introduction of the leads as adults was very well done. Each one seemed fascinating, and substantial. My only beef with this drama is the way it ended. I adored Kang-hee’s character as a child. She was street smart. She took Joon-hee in and cared for her, even when she couldn’t even feed herself. Her mother was a thief, but she was still so cool! I adored her character and Peen’s character the most, simply because they suffered the most as children. They had the most substance, I feel. Even as adults, they faced the most obstacles. Whereas June-hee went from one set of parents that loved her to another that loved her. She had a loving upbringing, whereas Kang-hee was just a stand in. And she knew it! So sad!
So I was disappointed in what they did with Kang-hee at the end. I thought it was retarded. The script writing never believably made Joon-hee cooler than Kang-hee. I thought that of the two, I really wanted to see Kang-hee have her happy ending. When she lost everything and everyone to Joon-hee to the end, I would have rather seen her find inner peace in a new life. Hook up with Peen, maybe. They had similar emotional scars. Either way, the writers didn’t capitolize on what a cool character she was in the 2nd half. It let me down.
BUT! Overall, definitely worth the watch. It’s different from most dramas, and the historical background of the 50’s and 70’s gave it an extra dynamic and sense of authenticity. It wasn’t just about the lead characters. It was about the eras they lived in. Good. Excellent, even. 🙂 I really liked this series. And if I had time to write fanfiction, I’d rewrite the ending.

Loved the show, I would buy this one too.

feel bad with this comment, but I thought this series was a bit too long, as soon as kang hei became ji hei you kinda know where the story is gonna lead up to. but then it took just way way too long to get there. it was great to learn of the social settings of Korea in the 70s, but the secret agent thingy just put me off. there is 3 more episodes to go and honestly I think the title has misled me, the fashion design element weighs so little in this series……Once I finished the end, it will get wrapped and sealed, definitely will not watch again
apology to all lovers of this series out there.

The ending of the drama really pissed me off. But overall I enjoyed watching this drama a lot. It was kinda boring at times but some scenes were haunting and very hard to forget. Though I dislike the ending strongly it made me cry a lot. That definetly made up for it.

I’m SO glad I stumbled onto this gem of a drama! I saw the music video of the main song on youtube by FTTS and since it looked good, I decided to watch it. Let me tell you, it’s definately worth the watch!
The historical element really adds depth to the drama. The story is written wonderfully and the acting is magnificent (the children are AMAZING). I honestly have no complaints against this drama, everything was carried out perfectly. I would recommed this drama to everyone…I know most people these days enjoy fast paced and fun dramas like Boys Before Flowers, but this one is really a classic!

Looks like there’s good and bad comments for this drama. But I have not watched it yet… Once I have, will post here, my comments.
October 12th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
is this drama worth watching?
October 17th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
This is the first time that i watched a drama and felt that the second actress’s role, Kang Hee outstand the first actress, Duh mi. I have to say that sometimes the story gets a bit over emotional when it shouldn’t, that’s why poeple think it’s too slow or boring….but I have watched a lot of sad movies and never have i seen an ending like this…. I was so touched by it. Kang Hee character, though “a little not nice” but perfectly understandable, deserve the credit for the greatest performance. Overall, i like this drama….. and for those who want to watch it…. watch for Kang Hee character, and you will be in loved with her.
