‘Basketball’ brings back the memories on its tvN debut

New tvN Mon-Tue drama ‘Basketball’ directed by Kwak Jung Hwan of ‘The Slave Hunters’ fame, made its debut on the night October 21st, and is proving to be a hit in the making already.

The drama is set within the turbulent period from the oppressive Japanese colonial era until the division of Korea into North and South. Through the game of basketball, the drama will touch on stories of hot-blooded youths who lived in those turbulent years, and also feature the Korean basketball team which took part in the 1948 London Olympics. That 1948 team was the first and last team to take part in the Olympics under a unified Korea name.

One of the key highlights for viewers would be seeing how the drama brings to life the vibrancy of the 1930s – 40s on television, especially as the era were decades away from this modern times. But all those fears were laid to rest, especially with director Kwak Jung Hwan at the helm, and had already shown his expertise through ‘The Slave Hunters’ previously. Viewers who had already seen ‘Basketball’, remarked that it felt like they were back in those times, and were attracted to the scenes in the drama which felt really real to them.

To replicate scenes as realistically as possible, CG effects were utilized 367 times in just the first episode. The streets of Korea in 1940, to all the buildings were exactly modelled like back in those days, and allowed one to feel for themselves what it was like in those dark times.

Kang San (Do Ji Han) is from a poor family, and struggles to make a living. He is however exceptional in playing basketball, and becomes successful in a series of games. Although the time was short, his basketball playing skills really wowed viewers who couldn’t get enough of it.

Do Ji Han, Lee Elijah, and Wonder Girls’ Ye Eun are relatively new to acting, but were able to slip into their roles effortlessly and gave convincing portrayals.

Viewers commented, “I’m going to only watch ‘Basketball’ on Monday and Tuesday,” “It looks like a hit drama in the making,” “Really looking forward to how it unfolds,” “They are rookies, but act really well,” “Their acting are really good,” “Director Kwak Jung Hwan is really talented.”

Will ‘Basketball’ become another hit drama in the making under Kwak Jung Hwan after ‘The Slave Hunters? Let us wait in anticipation
